While doing my research for my latest project (soooon, I promise! :)  ), I stumbled across this, which I had been aware of before but which I've never seen in its entirety up until now.

We all know that the G1 Megatron toy looks a) like crap and b) pretty much nothing like the animation model, right?

Well... there was an older prototype/concept for the Microman Gun Robo toy.

This appears to be what the early Marvel model is based on, which in turn got presumably simplified by Floro Dery into the Marvel TFU profile version.

And then there was this odd Megatron animation model from an old commercial for the "Transformers Power Cycle".

    Well, duh. :)

    Sources I raped:

The Pre Transformers Page for the Microman Gun Robo catalog image
The Japanese Transformers G1 Characters Archives book for the early Marvel model and one of the screencaps from the Power Cycle commercial (thanks Monzo for the scan!)
The Nordic Transfan Association for the TFU profile pic
X-Entertainment for the second screencap from the Power Cycle commercial. :)

Great findings! NM. I always wondered why there were several images of Megatron with a blue helmet, aspecially in that old 80's commercial.

Pretty cool info. Too bad they didn't release that prototype. Would have been a much better figure IMHO.

Hard to release a toy that never existed as anything but artwork, Laser Op (at least as far as we know). Unlike the early Optimus designs with the shoulder gun and long head antennae, this has never been seen in toy form.

I do think this artwork is the source of the models cited though.

Makes one wonder what was possibly wrong with that awesome looking prototype to end up with the completly different monstrosity we did get.

Well yeah, but I was just saying that they should have actually designed this toy instead of the one they did make. The design just looks better to me.

Of course... the early Prime design you bring up I thought was better too.

The model they chose has a more sinister looking face, as does the cartoon. However, the bot mode does look like $hit. So I ask, how come they didn't go with the first model with the face that they chose?

I could swear I have seen that somewhere before but I can't place it, anyway, it always confuses me when early concepts end up being better than what actually gets released.

That concept even has the heels that Reprolables just made upgrade stickers for. I challenge the entire Kitbash forum to make this prototype into reality.:D

Anyone have a pic of that early OP model? I've never seen it.
I love the G1 Megatron, but I'll agree that the early prototype looks better.

WOw that looks really good. Too bad they did not produce it. Now that would be something I would love to see Takara produce now! They can call it, "The Megatron you a ll wish we gave you in 84, but hey , its only 22 years later and now you got it." lol.

That prototype would have made a toy that was worthy of Megatron. I'm glad I have my MegaSCF. It's a little bit of justice for old Megatron.

Definitely like the prototype Wheeljack better. Much better proportioned than the released toy.

And it would kick ass if Hasbro and/or Takara were to get the prototype of Megs actually made for us. I'd get it even if it had an orange tip on the barrel.

Edit: *sigh* Where are my manners? Should have said this first....Great find, NM!
