Figure I'd post this here. Maybe someone has gone thru something similar or has some advice ...

So, at the end of June I started to get sick. Thought I had the flu. Dizzyness, nausea, really severe headaches, fever, loss of appetite, weakness, pretty much everything except vomiting.

After a week of it not getting any better, I went to the ER since it was a Sunday and I was supposed to work on Monday. After running some tests, I was told that my liver was inflamed. Told me that I had hepatitis and that I should see my PCP for more testing.

So I did. Hepatitis B and C came back negative and I was told that I have a viral hepatitis. Got bloodwork every week to check my liver levels and started me on pain meds for the headaches. Liver levels eventually went down, but my headaches have continued. Migraine level headaches.

They've been treating my symptoms as 2 different issues, even though I'm convinced that since they all started at the same time, they have to be related.

They've tried about 10 different medications on me since June, including topamax, endodan, and tramadol. I've had an MRI, cat scan, Heide (sp) scan and various bloodwork. Ive seen a neurologist, who actually told me there was nothing he could do.

My liver levels are starting to rise again, and the headaches continue. I'm supposed to see a digestive doctor on the 10th, which I scheduled myself, and go to a headache clinic on the 24th.

My doctors seem to have no clue as to what's going on, and seem to want to try and cover the symptoms with pain meds, which barely work. I saw another doctor on Thursday, but he gave me another pain med with the same effect.

Its been over 2 months now. I've been off work more than I've been there. Pretty much ruined my summer.

So, anyone else here dealt with something similar, or have any ideas on where to go from here? Me and the wife are starting to lose hope here and I'm starting to fear that I'm gonna go thru this for a long time to come.

Wow that sucks. Sorry to hear. Hope you get better soon. I am unfamiliar with the illness and don't have much advice. Hopefully someone else will.

Did they give you results for Hep A? There can be recurrence for up to a year, which might account for the changes in your liver levels. As far as the headaches go, have your doctors ruled out the possibility of side effects or even allergic reactions to some of the medications you've been getting? It's possible the headaches you're having now might be stemming from that.

Other than that, I'd just give your specialists as much information as you can, even minor symptoms you've been experiencing. And make sure you have a good support system and, as best as possible, try to keep a positive mindset. I can tell you from experience, those things make a huge difference in any kind of medical issue you might be facing.

Did they check you for Lyme Disease? All of the symptoms that you listed are the same for Lyme Disease which is spread by ticks.Seeing as how you're in PA that could be a possibility.

I hate how doctors just give you a bunch of pills and expect that to take care of every problem.

I was at the beginning of all this. One day we took Jozie to the park and I lifted Jozie up on to the slide a few times. Afterwards, I just couldn't catch my breath for over an hour. I still have trouble having enough energy to do alot of things around the house, or even just going out sometimes.

They've tested for stuff like anemia and that's clear. I'm afraid it might be related to my gastric bypass, which is why I'm going to the digestive doctor, but right now they seem to just want to treat me for migraines only so far.

I'm gonna try and get back in to see the doctor today. Pain medicine he gave me hasn't touched my headaches this weekend. Last time they were this bad, I went to the ER.

I'm pretty sure they looked into Lyme too, but that is something I'll check out. Thanks guys

I haven't dealt with this personally, but my mother has something similar. She has auto-immune hepatitus. It's where her immune system is attacking her liver for some reason. It's not really hepatitus in the sense you can catch it from her. She just suffers from all the same hepatitus symptoms.

Went to the doctor today. They're gonna check me for Lyme Disease.

Gonna try some steroids to break the headache, tried it before. they want to try them for longer this time. And I'm going to the Fast ER to get some IV medicine to try and break in just a little bit.

And hopefully find out how my liver levels are in a few days

Change your docs if you can, obviously the ones you currently have, have no idea what's going on.

I am not a doctor or anything, but wouldn't all the medication you have been taking affect your liver?

Same thing happened to me. Doctors didn't know what was wrong with me, then i was on all these pills and then they were like "zomg high liver enzymes" and I went through like 4 months of blood tests and doctors, i finally was ok enough to go off all the meds, and all of the sudden my liver was ok.

Yeah, with all the problems I had with my sons health, I learned something quickly.

If your doctor has no answers, change your doctor. He is not who you should be using for your issue.

Once you get a Dr that solves the issue, you want to send him Christmas cards. Drs can really misdiagnose and fuck people up. I think it happens a lot really.

All I can say to you is, next time you're in the Doctor, make it well known that you've been on pain meds for a good three months and that they're not working.

Other than that, Good luck to you, and I hope you eventually feel better. :)

Actually, I just changed doctors on Friday. He's in the same "practice" but another office. He's definitely more pro-active than the other guys I was seeing. He called the neurologist after I left and had called and talked to my wife before I even got home from my tests today. He's the first doctor I've ever had who will actually talk to me on the phone instead of letting his staff talk to me. I'm impressed so far. Seems to actually care.

Some of the meds affect the liver, some the kidneys, etc. The trick is finding the right one that doesn't affect the liver but fixes the problem.

I was thinking it had to do with your gastric bypass. I think the digestive doctor would be a pretty good idea. Maybe they need to look around the surgery area for leakage or something?

AHA I didn't know you had a gastric bypass ok again I am no doctor BUT, a friend of mine had gastric bypass and was experiencing similar symptoms to your, not all but some, plus her hair began falling out.
Turns out she wasn't getting enough protein I think it was in her very restrictive diet. As I recall when you've had a gastric bypass surgery you can only eat one cup of food and that's it, so if you use that 1 cup with crap food or not the appropriate nutrients then you get really bad deficiencies.
ALSO after a gastric bypass surgery your body sometimes becomes unable to ABSORB the nutrients it needs. Something to do with the immune system and your body attacks it like a foreign substance because it is still getting used to having a smaller stomach.
    Just something to thnik about
AGAIN, I am not a doctor, I did used to be a paramedic though.
I am just sharing what I do know and what I have seen happen through friends.

Getting the IV stuff at the fast ER helped for a little while, but the headache started back a little after midnight. It was back in full force when I tried to get up for work this morning.

They were supposed to call in some steroids to try but the pharmacy said they didn't receive the script, which is a normal thing to hear from my pharmacy but its close to home.
