If there's one thing I don't like about the new Classics, it's the lack of weapons and accessories. The toys just don't feel as complete as their G1 counterparts so I decided to fix that. So I took my Sideswipe out of the box for the first time and started working on 3 signature things: a jetpack, missile launcher, and white photon rifle. (1) The jetpack comes from one of those Power Ranger Operation Overdrive transformers. This is the one I used. I had bought one a number of months back that I intended on using for parts. The hand attachments had thrusters and I always felt they'd make a great jetpack. So I glued them together, filed down the fists on the inside, and attached them to the little backpack Sideswipe comes with. I also made the thrusters a little longer with some Lego pieces. And those are the flames from Hot Rod's missiles attached. (2) The missile launcher was simple in concept (the peg from his gun fits naturally into the hole on Sideswipe's shoulder). However, the missile itself was a bitch to execute. No amount of superglue or apoxie would keep it firm enough so it took more work than I wanted. I just used Classics Hot Rod's gun and modded the missile stem with the cap from a Neo-Shifter missile I had (the piece connecting them came from the inside of a retractable pen). I'm not entirely satisfied with it because it extends further than I would've liked and reminds me more of Wheeljack. But whatever. (3) I really wanted to get a G1 Sideswipe gun and mod the handle, but I didn't like the idea of paying $5 on eBay for a small piece of plastic so I took the gun he came packaged with and merged it with a Neo-Shifter piece and a misc. cannon from Armada Unicron. Looks close enough to a white G1 photon rifile while boasting an updated look. 12-28-08 Update I finished up work on this kit not too long ago. It turned out pretty good. However, I'm not blind to its imperfections. The paint is a little sloppy in some parts, I didn't sand down the apoxie enough in certain areas so some spots appear deformed. And as I've come to learn, white is a bitch to brush paint with. The gun looks like it was painted with white out. I'm going to see about touching up some areas, but it's more or less completed. I have to say, this isn't a bad attempt on my part at all. It's technically my first completed TF custom. I'd like to make another one that's more polished. But this effort definitely wasn't in vain. And there you have it: a Universe Sideswipe with signature accessories.
