I thought I'd chill this morning (since I didnt have to work) and catch up on some games I've been neglecting. Something seemed a bit "off" to me though, so I grabbed the camera.

I think something may be wrong here.

Yeah... pretty sure something is wrong.

Does it happen repeatedly, even after you shut it off and back on again?

Yup. been trying for a few hours to get it working. does that in the system menu, and every game I put in. I got it used online, so it didnt have a box. without a box, sony will charge 130 dollars to fix it. thats 130 I dont have, and 130 that I shouldnt have to pay anyways.

I already have a DS (longer than the PSP, actually). and I have the latest firmware, I update every time a new one is released. This is just a case of shitty hardware.

PoPoLoCrois. my favorite PSP game. It was the easiest game to show the problem in.

I threw it at a wall in disgust, and it works fine now (minus a cracked battery cover).

if your PSP ever screws up, just pitch it at a wall. that should take care of the problem. I bet thats how sony fixes defective PSPs sent to them.

To me, it just looks like the down button was jammed.

every direction on the D-pad was working as "down", even after I opened it up and touched each of the buttons' sensors to the sensor pad one by one. no matter how many times I turned it on/off, or changed games, it kept doing that until I threw it. nothing was wrong with the d-pad at all, the PSP just insisted on reading everything from it as "down".

And people wonder why we are such a violent species... I don't blame man, I blame the universe. If violence didn't fix things, we wouldn't have become violent.

It is also reassuring that a PSP can survive being thrown at the wall.... I know my computer Printer can't... D'oh!

Sounds like you had part of the casing or something similar lodged on the circuit board so that everytime you pressed the directional pad, the first thing to sensor was "down".

Throwing it dislodged whatever it was.

    Kudos!

I am going to guess lack of proof of warranty.

So tempting to respond solely to the topic title... must... resist... must... resist...

Anyways... wall, huh? That's an interesting fix. I can't say I've ever been so mad at an inanimate object so as to throw it at a wall. I usually just walk away. Anger problems, perhaps?

Then that is just retarded. 99% of all home electronics can be verified just from the equipment itself.

if sony puts their serial numbers and/or any other pertinent numbers on their boxes as opposed to the units themselves, then yes that is truly the most retarded thing i've ever heard.

    if not...

...and the unit is still under manufacturer's warranty, then it should be taken care of. period. and even if it isn't, i'm still puzzled as to what relevance a box has on repair costs.

No box? A reciept I can understand, but no box?

Anyway, throwing it at the wall helped? I think Kicky's right about somehting being lodged, chances are it was probably somehting stupid, like a grain of salt or something equally shitty.

I was actually wondering about PSP's longterm longevity, I mean the UMD drive is asking for trouble long term IMO.
