UPDATE Got it fixed!!!! The guy that fixed for me told me the problem was the same as the red rings of death. Atleast thats what I understood. He said it was overheating and the mother board unglued itself and that PS3 has some emergency shutdown to prevent permanent damage. 60 bucks to fix and it's running like new.

After 5 years my PS3 croaked on me last week. I just about have enough to buy another but was wondering if there is anyway to retrieve all my pictures, downloads, and trophies? Thanks in advance.

No, none of it is retrievable unfortunately. Your best bet is to try and resuscitate the PS3 long enough to get your stuff off.

If you stick the old PS3's hard disk in another PS3 it will just ask to format the disk, and it's not a PC readable file system either.

This is why you should always backup your data regardless. You never know what will happen.

So this doesn't happen to me again. How do you back up your data on a PS3?

Trophies are tied to your account, not your system. So you should be fine in that regard. As for the others, I hate to say it, but I'm pretty sure you're screwed.

Did'nt Sony just release something to prevent this from happening?

Sorry to hear man. Atleast your one PS3 got more life than my four 360's did.

Save games get cloud storage on PSN now, but only if you pay for PSN+, I believe.

Yeah the Cloud Memory or something but mine died the day before that was released.

I'm happy with the time my PS3 served me. 5 years is a long time and I played it hard. My PS2 died 3 years after I bought it and didn't play it that much. One thing I must say I'm not thrilled about getting the PS3 slim.

Trust me when I say I've been living under a rock, but be patient w/me. Do you have to pay for PSN+ on a monthly basis like XBOX Live, or is it a one-time purchase deal?

Most people pay the $50 yearly, but you can split up payments every 3 months I think.

Well, i'd see if your model is repairable before running off and buying a new PS3! What happened? Games don't play? No power? Yellow light?

Maybe it's something minor that can be fixed?

Sorry to hear that your PS3 died. I have a 360 and I'm alway a bit nervous about it, and I'm currently thinking about backing up the system just in case something bad happens, although I have no idea how to do it. I just recently gotten the gold membership for Xbox Live, and in the mail they offered to extend my warranty for 3 more months. However, I'm not even sure if it is still under warranty or not, and if I should save this offer until something unfortunate happens.

What might be worth looking into is finding any Electrical Repair shops in your area, any decent one will know console repair, and most likely will be cheaper. Way back before the 360 or PS3 were even known, my original Xbox went dead. Friend I knew thru Xbox live worked at a Rental Store that also did repair work. 1 week later I had it back running like new, and I only payed postage for sending cause he was a nice guy. He did Pwn my Xbox though, sent it back with a huge Piece of Paper taped on saying "Pwned". He just did the same to another buddies 360 for less than 30 bucks.

When I turn it on it starts going. The fan starts running and the green light comes on, but before anything comes up on the screen it beeps twice shuts down and the light turns red and is just blinking.

Yikes! If and when you can get yourself an external drive as well. As you now know, it's worth it.
