anyone else think this is an over used idea? I mean let's list some characters who's parents are dead
    superman
    batman
    spiderman
    captain america
    hal jordan
    iron man
    wolverine

A bit over used don't you think?

You forgot captain marvel. He was a for-real orphan before he got his powers. Or the green hornet, if you count him as a superhero.

It's a common idea because many of these characters were developed with young audiences in mind. In the heroic archetype, you need to establish the "you can't go home again" point of being thrust out into the world and having to fend for yourself, having to grow into the heroic role. Removing a character's parents is one way to do so, especially in the cases where that removal of a support structure is directly tied into their origin as an inspiration, see: Superman, Batman, (technically) Spiderman.

I mean, I don't think you should really be counting characters who just have no parents because they're already adults and their parents died of natural causes, but most of the characters on that list have had their parent's deaths tie into their story in one way or another.

More interesting is the prevalence of surrogate support networks for a lot of those heroes, which stand to represent the theme of family in their ongoing stories, as moral support, or as sounding boards/foils for the character, which is interesting in terms of a divergence from the classical heroic cycle into the modern "serial hero" archetype. Superman has his adoptive parents, Batman has Alfred, Spiderman has Aunt May, etc. etc. That these characters are often as important to the development of a hero as the biological family they lack is also worthy of analysis.

Do you expect Captain America's parents to still be alive?

His parents died before Captain America was frozen, and their lives tie into his origin in a lot of versions of the character, so he's worth including.

His dad fought and died in WWI (or otherwise died while he was young and acted as an absent ideal to live up to in other versions of the character), inspiring Rogers to become a soldier in the first place, despite the wishes of his ailing mother, who was protective of her sickly son but nonetheless instilled in him the ideas of mercy, compassion, and a love of the arts, all of which helped to distinguish the character once he attained his powered.

Let's see. Supergirl's parents are dead, Robin's parents are dead, Bruce Banner's parents are dead, are Green Arrow's parents dead?

I think its a bit misleading, not all the deaths were direct catalyst to them becoming vigilantes.

    Batman: yes
    Spidey: uncle ben

Those are the 2 that immediately came to mind.

It's better that way. Would suck if they got grounded, and crime started overflowing.

    Depends on the Robin:

Dick Grayson / Nightwing - big part of the origin
Jason Todd / Red Hood - never knew his father. Mother was eventually found, alive, but died at the hands of The Joker in "A Death in the Family".
Tim Drake / Red Robin - Father was alive for a long while, only died during the Identity Crisis at least 10 years after his introduction. His mother died after he became Robin, his stepmother is still alive though rarely seen - or she was in Bludhaven when they destroyed it.
Stephanie Brown / Spoiler / Batgirl III - Father is the Cluemaster, I think he's still about. He was dead for a while, but he popped up after his death in the "War Crimes" arc. Mother is very much alive too.
Damian Wayne / Robin - both parents are very much alive, and his maternal grandfather is also still around. With parents like his though of course he has other issues. And family reunions tend to be "Batman VS Ras al Ghul".

Mostly though it is a case of motivation, and also freeing the hero up to do the superhero thing. When they have someone to come home to, it presents a very different dynamic. Case in point, Spider-Man and Aunt May, how many times has Spidey needed to balance his crime fighting with looking out for her while she is ill?

    Short list
    Val and Franklin Richards.

Yep. He's a rip-off of Batman, and he was created specifically by DC's editorial staff to cash in on Batman's popularity. Their basic back stories are very similar. Rich orphans with cave systems under their stately manors. The big divergences are GA's Robin Hood theme and learning archery on a deserted island, and Batman's globe trotting to learn everything about crime fighting.

Power Pack's family is still alive. Up until recently Barry allens family was alive till it was retconned. Wally's family is alive. Batwoman's and Batgirl's fathers are alive. Batgirl's mother recently showed up in her book. Kyle rayner's mother was alive till the Sinestro Corps war. Wonder Woman's mother is off and on depending on the continuity. Curryly she's a stone statue and her father is now apparently Zeus. Superman's parents can vary depending on continuity. Nova's parents are alive, but he may not be anymore. Various avengers have parents still alive. I'd have to keep checking but I'm sure there are others.
