So I came home from work to find my neighbor's SUV parked in the drive way and slightly on fire. This alarmed me since his driveway is right next to ours and any resulting explosion would surely do some damage to our garage and house. Also because his SUV was on F$#%ING FIRE!

So without putting my car in the garage (don't have an automatic opener), I ran to his front door and knocked very quickly. The look on his face was pretty priceless when I told him his vehicle was on fire. The small fire quickly turned into a blaze as I pulled my car into the garage to get it out of harm's way (hopefully). The front tires both blew out, scaring the shit out of me, but I got my car into the garage and got away from the situation.

Thankfully the fire department arrived quickly and put it out before it could explode, since it apparently had a full tank of gas. The guy said he hadn't used the vehicle in weeks, and I didn't see anyone around it when I had arrived home, so it was very strange. It was just nuts how quickly a small pool of fire under a vehicle quickly escalated into a blaze, and how our neighborhood was transformed into an orgy of emergency vehicles, firefighters, and gawkers.

    Here is the aftermath:

I would almost ask if he ever checked to see if there were any Recalls on his SUV there. For something not used in week its pretty much gonna be something faulty with the vehicle or someone was messing with it. Or drunk idiots firing bottle rockets out there car going by at 50+ and hitting something.

Not Bay enough. Needs to be either at the top of a 30-foot fireball, or completely blown to pieces.

    Needs more awesome.:bay

Damn talk about a bad day...Wow if it was parked in the garage and that was attached to the house...he's one lucky SOB. Though next time please leave your car on the street, away from the burning vehicle, no sense in you or your car being hurt/damaged. Good to hear no one was hurt though.

I didn't say it was a good impression. I wish I had thought to take some pictures before the fire department got there. My landlord, who lives across the street, immediately came outside with his camcorder.

Thankfully he didn't have a garage, just that little shed. He was lucky that it just melted the siding on the back of the house and on the shed, instead of anything catching fire. He just stopped over to thank me as I was in the middle of posting this. As quickly as the fire escalated I don't doubt that any further delay on my part would have meant significantly more damage.

Yeah I felt really stupid about that. It was a combination of a situation I was not prepared for, and the fire getting out of hand quicker than expected. I about shit myself when the tires blew and the fire started roaring like a mad beast.

Pretty sure cars don't explode like in the movies, but as always it is better to err on the side of caution. In fact I think an empty tank is more dangerous than a full one because of fumes.

Either way, you handled the situation well. Glad you weren't hurt mate.

You're right about the gas tank. When he stopped by to thank me he told me that he had just put $89 worth of gas in the vehicle, and his buddy who is a mechanic said that was good because if the tank was empty it would have blown for sure. I did not know that. The more you know!

Nope, but I doubt I would have cared if they were in the vehicle at the time.

Stuff like this was happening on Fords and Mercury's back in the day. Apparently something with the cruise control boxcaused something to wear through and fluid would drop onto electrical stuff and catch fire. It would happen to cars that hadn't been running or hadn't been driven for a while.

You know, that sounds like a plausible explanation. He hadn't driven it in a long time, and it looked like fluid that had caught fire was dripping from it. Though I'm not sure what year his vehicle was, but I definitely don't think it qualifies as "back in the day" old.
