    RPG MAKER VX

This came out in late 2007. It's the next "version" of the RPG Maker series, however this one you can actually run on WindowsVista ;)

How easy is it to use? Well, I've been playing with it for a few hours, and I already have a side-battle system like Final Fantasy utilized in their 8/16/32/PSOne days. Though you have to have some knowledge in scripting (Twin Twist could probably do it).

But yeah! Fuck these games coming out, let's make our own :D

ive always loved the japanese cpu rpg makers it is beautiful. also not sure if ne one here plays but city of heroes/ city of villians but they just added a new game thing called mission architect which allows you to make your own story arcs and missons with all your custom made bad guys and text. its like being able to make up your own comic story lines.

RPG Maker XP also works with vista just fine. if you run into problems, just set it to run as an administrator and in XP SP2 compatability.

VX isnt really all that great compared to XP (in fact, in many ways it's far inferior), but it does thankfully make some of the most commonly custom-scripted features in games built-in this time around. I just cant see any reason to spend $60 on what is essentially a step back from RPG Maker XP, which is still $60.

I'm looking forward to Enterbrain's next "Maker" title, Action Game Maker, which adds compatability with the XNA platform for publishing games on Xbox Live, and the ability to compile your game as a flash file for direct hosting online. it's out now in japan, and I'm expecting a US announcement in the next few months.

Kickback, you had XP, right? What happened to the game you were making with that?

I recall reading somewhere that all the battles in VX were first person (classic Dragon Quest/Warrior style) and that they did away with the side view battles. Is that true? I was considering getting it but I would get XP if side views are gone in the new one.

Sideview battles have never been an official part of RPG Maker ... but you can simply write a script (RSS for the win!) that allows it to happen. But it takes an advanced mind in script programming to make your own, so the best thing to do is take someone else's script (with credit) and backwards edit it to match your story.

As for XP vs. VX ...

My old computer died. I couldn't get RPG Maker XP to load up in Vista. Kept having nTitles server issues, yet I disabled my firewall and my virus protector and it still wouldn't access. I talked to support, and long story short, I'm playing my 100% legit and free RPG Maker VX thanks to their support giving me a serial number and activation code, no purchase necessary.

Don't ask me how they justified it. XP and VX are two different games.

You better make me one of those enemies that always runs away, Kickback.

Or at least grant me a swift in-game death.

Awesome, so I'm not the only one messing about with RPG Maker on here after all! I'll have to show off the game I'm creating some time, though it's a long way off anything right now.

Actually, there was a sideview battle system for RM2003. The program was basically RM2000 with a sideview battle system and a couple of other tweaks - mostly a cosmetic update with a new battle system.

Though with both the newer programs you can just script in what you want. It just takes a lot of fine tuning to make it do exactly what you want it to, even when you've been using the thing for years.

Ooh! Make me a guy in a town that teaches you how to use a net to catch stuff like fish, which can be eaten to level up, heal during battle, or be sold for money!
