    dang...really bad week..

-First Week of School (starts a whole new list)

    -PSP got Bricked

    and now.......

first off- this is a 'less than one month old' Toshiba Satelight laptop that uses windows vista

I went to a site i usually trust to download an atachment for my media player and...

I kept getting a windows error message:
    pop-up
    "Windows Explorer has stopped working"
    pup-up
"we are atempting to fix this problem. This may take a few minutes"

then, after 5 seconds the whole desktop refreshes (they screen and icons blink) and the process begins again and kept looping.

I fixed that using this thread: http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=1272291&SiteID=17
which said to basicaly run Task Manager (ctrl-alt-del), use the run the "New Task" option as a browser. and In the browse window to select 'all files' and to sort by date modified. I looked at all the most recent files, and deleted the suspicous one, which stopped the problem

then I ran my Trend Micro Antivirus and Spysweeper and found lots o' stuff (3 viruses and about 11spywares) they didn't get them all off the first time so I had to run them a few times

    But now:

I go to open Windows Internet Explorer and TONS of new tabs open up, ALL ADS. I call my friend who is a computer tech guy at USAA and he says that...

My Laptop is the victim of a Browser Hijack!
not just the one that latches on to your homepage, I tried changing my homepage while my internet was off and It(malware, virus, whatever) found it (the new homepage)....luckily I dont think it has a bot. I am working on reformatting it today...(takes longer than It take WOW + BC + all patches combined to install) plus I had to call like 10 people (companies) with tele-ads for wait music, which literally gave me a migraine...

Would be a good idea, Firefox has a lot less security issues than Explorer

    Vista FTL! :p

Hmm, I'd say go the Firefox route if you've got Vista, by the looks of it.

I would switch to FireFox. No page hijacks with this browser. As for getting Vista, I'm sorry for you.

Firefox is way better than Internet Explorer these days. And of course, Toshiba laptops are notorious for breaking down after a few years or so.

Give Firefox and Opera a go, they've both got their own pros and cons.

That sucks. I had a trojan the other day at work. It was actually pretty clever little thing, it changed my host file so that it sent me to a non-existant IP whenever I tried to go to a spyware or anti-virus website, it edited the registry so that I couldn't go into control panel to remove anything, and it created a sneaky pop up saying my comp was infected and to go to a site to install spyware.

I was able to check symantecs site on another computer and saw some removal instructions but those didn't work, so I had to re-image my whole system. Thankfully I had everything backed up on the network.

    Sneaky little bastards.

yeah, with the ones as bad as you had, it makes it almost imposible to find the source file.

at least none of us had any bots, those suckers suck.

unfortunatly browser highjack was actualy an older thing that is just recently comming back :(  and the new ones are alot smarter

lol one of the nastiest bugs out there when its activated encrypts all your files and stores them in an encrypted rar/zip file and then throws away the key.....

have a hijacker/trojan try smitrem or smitfraudfix...or hijackthis if you know your way around.

there is also CWShredder and AVG i think, but I just went, "meh" and d decided to copy the little info I had to my external hard drive and proceded to reformat and then revert back to factory settings like I had been instructed by the evil phone technicians. I like to play it safe, =P

I know how you feel about having your computer go all Pete Tong on you - last week, my PC decided it wasn't gonna load Windows due to a corrupt or missing file - so I had to do a complete reinstall of everything!! This happened last wednesday, and I'm still trying to get everything back to normal!!

    ... And I don't even have Vista!!
