So my kid's cub scout pack decided to have a parent's division this year and I thought I'd give it a whirl. I decided I needed a Transformers theme, and I got a little ambitious. I patterned him after Windcharger since his transformation scheme is the most basic and I had one to use as a model. He's not perfect, but I'm pretty pleased with how he turned out. He can't stand as his knees are incredibly loose and he's back heavy. I also didn't get him quite lined up when I assembled him, and never figured out how to keep the nails I used for the knee joints from sliding out. I also had to rush to finish him in time for the race, so the paint isn't very clean (or finished), but I hope to correct that and give him a nice finish in the near future.
While the transformation is nice, with pine wood derby cars, speed, and weight are the key things. I remember when this kid with the wost looking car kept winning because his was just streamline enough and weighed the highest amount allowable. While the kid who made this really nice looking Batmobile kept losing.
Yeah, I threw speed and weight out the window. The car weighed 3 oz. (max is 5). I wasn't going to be winning any races. In fact, I was just pleased it was able to make it to the end of the track. Remember boys and girls...it's not about who wins or loses. It's about having the coolest toys.
One of my last derby cars was based on Armada Prime. It was the boxiest ones out there, and it got 2nd.
Nice! The first thing I thought when I saw the thumbnail was Windcharger. I made a few pinewood derby cars with church groups and Cub Scouts when I was younger. They never did all that well, and I was a pretty sour loser, but I liked making them.
Yep, this is totally fun! If Windcharger doesn't win the race, just have him beat up the rest of the cars
Cool I always liked Windcharger. He was my first transformer.(Not to hijack your post, Just wanted to share the pinewood love.)I made a Prime PWD Car.
