    Hey guys,

Just got back from BotCon (where I didn't have access to a computer.) Five hour car trip, at least I wasn't driving. I don't have time for anything right now but a quick hello to everyone, but I'll be writing up my report of the trip with special focus on winning the Transformer Idol contest and what that was like soon as I get the chance so stay tuned. It was great seeing everyone and meeting both new friends and old. You guys rock!

You and Vangelus did a great job Saturday night. Now who were the other people on stage with you :p

It was good to see you again as well. Now you just need to start saving up for next year's con.

Yeah, big ups again on the voice bit.

And thanks for being cool about the whole megaphone-in-the-ear thing. I'll find a better seat next time. :D

I didn't actually "meet" you because you were just flocked with people, but great job on the script reading!

Thanks everyone! Thanks for posting on this thread to so that I can put some more faces/memories with screen names.

Here's the first part of my report:

    Thursday
Arrived at Cincinnati in the afternoon with my mom. She tours the city, I do BotCon, it works out nice for both of us. The first people I see upon walking into the Hyatt hotel are Vangelus, Draven, and a few others so I walked over to say hello before I checked in and got my room. Mom and I ate lunch at the Wah Mee Chinese Restaurant then walked to Fountain Square. I picked up my registration stuff at 8:00 and waited in the club store line. I didn't get any exclusives this year (I registered too late for this year's set and did the Energon package, as for the other figures I didn't have much cash and didn't want to spend my money on exclusives before I'd even had a chance to check out the dealers room so I just picked up Club Excusive Airazor.

Hint - For those who don't know, sign up for the collectors club if you aren't a member already when you sign up for BotCon next year people. You end up saving about $10 off your registration fee and will be able to buy club exclusives during the convention as well as all the other perks of being in the club for a year.

After waiting in line, which is a great time to talk with fellow fans, I went to my first parts party. This was probably my 6th BotCon, but there are always things going on each year that are new to you just because there is so much going on in general. Anyway, for people who have never atteneded a parts party before - it's fun, but very crowded. I actually took some items from my own collection to sell (well, okay, I had a full suitcase full) and while I bought a few items I was looking for for my own collection I still ended up with about $40 more in my pocket than I came to the convention with. I also probably had no idea what I was doing price-wise, but as long as I got reinbersed for what I originally paid for a toy I figured was good enough. Was it a good deal to trade Alt Camshaft for a Japanese S1 BW Megatron I don't know, but if LeoKaiser's happy that's all that matters right? ;-) Again, you're welcome Leo, and thanks for Megs.

Hint - If you plan to bring a lot stuff to sell at the parts party and you're not a dealer it might help to have a list of toys you brought with you for people to look through rather that just digging around in a box or whatever. You don't have to have a list, but many people seemed to find mine helpful.

    Friday
How many hours of sleep did I get? Okay, nevermind. Cincinnati is a maze. I don't care if the mall is only a block away, I got lost more times going to that place that weekend than I care to remember looking for food, despite following a fellow fan that morning to Chick-Fil-A. The Convention Center was so big it wasn't much better. Skywalks may be great in theory, but they go on forever.

Anyway, I arrived in time for the Transformers Idol voiceover auditions. I had participated in the same contest a few years ago at BotCon 2005 (but didn't win). This year's auditions were a bit different. There was no script. We would improvise. Feel the terror of those words people, I know I did.

We did get brief descriptions of the characters we were auditioning for though - Transtech Shockwave for the guys and Flare-Up (an exclusive from the 2005 BotCon) for the gals. I'll admit, I was happy to hear about the female character being Flare-Up. I found it easier to get into character with her than when I auditioned for Flame-War in 2005. I guess I'm just an Autobot rather than a Decepticon at heart. But seriously, there is a certain quality in voice acting where you can just hear if a character's voice should be low or high, soft or loud, young or old, etc, and I think I managed to tune into that instinct somehow with this character.

So after the terror of being told we were to improvise, the men went first. Phew! They were told to be Transtech Shockwave ordering from the MacDonalds drive through (but to make the character their own, be creative and not worry about copying G1 Corey Burton's voice). After a while the judges shook things up a bit by adding an additional twist - now Shockwave has a crush on the person taking his order. Pretty much everyone did a great job, but Vangelus really just nailed it from the first words out of his mouth, but I'll let him tell you about that.

I was the first of the women to go and just as I have what I'm going to do planned out in my head, they change the scenario on me! Yikes! Now I'm supposed to be Flare-Up explaining to her maternal unit why I'm over on my wireless minutes again. Benson Yee was kind enough to help me out by playing my maternal unit which is something uniquely amusing in itself...but I digress.

I'm not sure why I decided on a southern accent for Flare-Up but it seemed to fit the character. I think I drew a little inspiration from Rogue from the X-Men since Flare-Up's character bio Yee gave us decribed her as being young, tough, and hot-headed. I was later told after the actually dinner script reading by a fan from Georgia than my approximation of southern accent was decent enough not to be embarassing so I guess I did something right. :)  When I showed my mom the Flare-Up toy when we got home, she thought the toy looked like she was wearing red high heeled cowboy boots, so maybe I drew some unconcious inspiration from that too. I ended up being one of three women to audition which was a bit of a shame since I remember more women from 2005, I remember at least five from back then, but I'm not going to complain about less competition. ;-)

It was so much fun to watch the auditions. Vangelus taped it all and if there is a way to show it to you guys who missed that pannel or didn't get to attend BotCon the Collector's Club guys really want to find a way to put it up on their website for you guys to see, as well as our actual performance with the voice actors at casino night. And if that doesn't work out maybe if you PM Vangelus and ask him nicely he'll put it up on youtube or something.

The judges told us that the winners of Tranformers Idol would be announced during the TF Animated pannel so I stuck around through the IDW and TF Animated pannels in the meantime. Both those pannel were very fun. I'm not going to repeat any breaking news since I'm sure anything to say has been said already by others. All Hail Megatron looks like it's going to be awesome. I'm also looking foward to Marty Isenberg's Animated miniseries, but the best news imho is the upcoming Maximum(?) Dinobots storyline that should answer question about what hppened to Hot Rod and Sunstreaker and all the other few Autobots still left behind on Earth.

The Animated Pannel was great. Matt, Derrick, and Marty have produced a truly entertaining new show for us. I wish I could remember more specific stories, but I just remember how they said Bumber took one look at the model sheet for Blitzwing and came up with the german accents, plus the stories behind a lot of in jokes like Angry Archer being named for one of our favorite Hasbro designers and such, the origin of Captain Fanzone name, working with Weird Al and how Tommy Kennedy's son is the biggest Weird Al fan on the planet, Sentinel Prime looking like the Tick is intentional, they wouldn't spill the beans on Sari's origin, and just the great fan reception the show has received. No confirmation if we get season 3 yet, but it's very hopeful.

Then they announced the Transformers Idol contest winners. Which of course was awesome to hear. Then we had the VA pannel. The poor VA's. Bumper looked terrified to be at his first convention not knowing quite what to expect (though he loosened up considerably thoughout the weekend.) David Kaye was the old pro but was operating on only two hours of sleep. Tara seemed to sort of know what to expect, I'd guess she's been to some kind of convention before, just not one with us TF fans. She joked around the most and had fun doing her voices for us. She was pleased to hear about positive fan reaction to Sari. According to David, Teddy Kennedy (Starscream) had wanted to come to the con, but found out to late to attend. He would be a great guest for a future BotCon. Bumper apparently originally hails from the Ohio area and did some movies in Germany when he was younger which helped him come up with his Blitzwing voice. He also liked the Transformer toys when he was younger. David admitted it was weird to go from being Megatron for so many years to being Optimus. It took him about six episodes into the series to feel comfortable with his new character. After the pannel I introduced myself to the three actors so they would know who I was and told them I looked forward to working with them.

I then hung out in the dealers room until the Hasbro pannel where I managed to find the final pieces I needed for my BW collection, a G2 Bumblebee, as well as a unmodified MP Megatron. TF Source has a great deal on him for only $75.

I was told to meet one of the convention staff at 5:00 at the info booth to get my script and for a possible rehearsal with the VA's. But the VA's were quite understansbly too pooped to do anything. Vangelus and I then just spend some time geeking out talking about how cool it was to finally be part of the official TF cannon in some small way. I HAVE A TOY OF MYSELF! Poor Vangelus does not. :-( Though he does hold the unique distiction of being to only Transtech character to have a voice actor. :)  Please Hasbro, we need a Transtech Shockwave!

While Vangelus them departed to get ready for Faction Feud, I went to get dinner at Chick-Fil-A and proptly got lost again on the way.

Just as this was my first year to attend the parts party, this was my first year to attend Faction Feud. I never was part of a message board before but this time I was there to cheer our guys on. As you can see Vangelus's serious study time paid off for our team...okay maybe not. ;-) But we still managed to sweep the VA contest and have the best cheerleaders of any board, especially Squirrelcar. Pay no attention to the nasty people telling you to be quiet Squrrel. (Seriously, it was no prob Squirrel, thanks for understanding. Next time I'll know to sit behind rather than in front of you though :)  ). I want a flag too guys! Where was mine? I also want to thank you guys from BotCon 2005 who encouraged me to join this board in the first place (you Hooters guys know who you are), I was a rather shy lurker before I met you guys, and I'm glad that you encouraged me to take to plunge two years ago. I've enjoyed it ever since.

The final highlight of the night was the new Animated episode with Weird Al as Wreck-Gar. For those of you who have or haven't read the spoilers it really was the funniest episode to date. It should be airing next weekend in the line up, so I hope you like it as much as we did. There is something really cool about the community experience of watching a new never before seen episode of TFs. It was the same feeling I got back in BotCon '99 when the first ep of BM aired at the convention. One of the best parts of any BotCon is really just being with your fellow fans who enjoy the same thing you do and no matter how many times you go to BotCon it's always a special feeling.

The TF Animated ep was then followed by the TF 2007 movie with special commentary by the Hasbro guys. It was pretty cool too but I only stayed for the first half hour or so if I was going to be awake enough to last through Saturday up through the VA script reading so I turned in early.

    To be continued...

Thanks. I forgot to mention the film fest. Congrats to Shimabura Prime! I always love MLTF. All of the entries were pretty funny.

Shimabura gave us Bumblebee revenge on Sector 7.

MSIB answered the time old question how do MSIB collectors play with their toys.

The dubbed clips one had lots of great moments. I don't think I'll ever look at the Captain Planet theme in quite the same way again.

Bumblebee goes to School was a little weird, but also funny. I always like BB.

I hope the contest does get more entires next year so they can do it again.

    Saturday
Got lost on way to the mall again. Got Subway.

Now that I think about it, the Hasbro pannel was this day, not Friday. Anyway, I went though the autograph line for both the VAs and the TFA writers/directors. Got my plush BB and Op signed by Kaye and Bumper and had the rest sign my program. I got a chance to meet some nice Brits in the autograph line where we talked about the horrors of going through American airport security these days.

After that, still not having my script for the VA reading that night I tried to track down a BotCon staff member to tell me something. I was told to track down Pete Sinclair. Throughout the weekend Vangelus and I learned something very interesting about Pete, he's a ninja! ;-) One minute he'll be there and the next he'll be gone or mysteriously show up on the other side of the dealers room a second later. Maybe he's been taking lessons from TFA Prowl. Anyway, I realized I could catch up with Pete after the BotCon pannel later. So I hung out in the dealer's room again and took a look at the art show entries. The transformable movie Frenzy was very inpressive.

The Hasbro pannel made me realize how broke I'm going to be over the next year (classics Bluestreak, squeeeeee!) and finally caught up with Pete who gave me my script and told Vangelus and I where to meet up with the VA guys at around quarter to 9:00 for a read through before we performed that night. We went back to the hotel the change for the casino dinner and rode up with Simon Furman in the elevator.

On the way back down I ended up waiting 10-15 minutes for the elevator to reach my floor to the point where the people waiting were starting to wonder if the elevator was broken, but it finally came. Whoever make up the rules that stairs at the Hyatt can only be used in case of emergency is a real idiot.

I caught up with my friend Chris (no not Kickback), the Chinese one, (no not Vangelus), my pen pal from San Fransisco who I met at my first BotCon back in '99. I know a lot of Transfans named Chris for some odd reason. ;-) Anyway, Chris Q and I got dinner, his suggestion that you should eat before you gamble was right, the sushi was gone quickly. It was kinda weird waiting in line all around the room and not knowing what kind of food it was until you got up there. I got a little bit of everything. My fortune cookie said it would be a wonderful year full of suprises and so far in 2008 that is proving to be true with my life in many ways We then went down to the bingo room, I left before any of the so called craziness even happened I think to meet the VA guys. Chris Q ended up winning a movie Op keychain I think that he showed me later.

I went up to the former autograph area (where I was told the rehearsal would be) where the people up there mistook me for one of the high school kids at the prom that was going on up there. I know I look young and that's something I'll be greatful for in about 10-15 years but I really am the same age as SuperMegatron people. So after going up and down the escalator a few times and not seeing any actors or other con people to the point where the doorman was probably sick of seeing me, (apparently you could easily get out of the casino night area but not back in without the doorman) I went to go find Vangelus back in the casino room, where I found him losing gracefully and loudly at a hand of blackjack.

Vangelus and I soon met up with Derrick Wyatt, Marty Isenberg, and Matt Youngberg again to rehearse but the VAs were late. But then everything runs late at Botcon so I really shouldn't have been surprised by that. But as a person who is usually early about such things it was a little annoying. Or maybe it's just my anal rententive personality. ;-) I was entertained however while we waited by Vangelus geeking out to Matt about Japanese cinema and an anime called Gurren Lagann (which I'm going to have to check out myself now).

Bumper and David showed up. Tara was still at dinner but we decided to start the read through anyway. As I later learned from the scriptwriters Greg and Trent their intention had been for Bumper to read Dr. Sumdac and Marty to read the announcer but Marty so impressed us with his voice shredding Sumdac impersonation that he got roped into doing it for the actual performance too. I think he was losing his voice by the end of the night, poor Marty. Bumper got to be the narrator and have a conversation with himself. Marty read Sari for the rehersal. It was a good thing I got to read the script beforehand and we got to at least do a read through otherwise I would have been cracking up on stage. David Kaye had a good idea where the big audience laughs would come though and warned everyone to expect about a five minute pause of laughter once he said one of his treadmark character phrases (and that's all the spoilers you'll get from me for now on the script in case we do get the performance posted somewhere or script available to read online).

As soon as we finished the script Tara showed up and was missing the first 14pages of her script. Last I'd been told to his whereabouts that day, Pete Sinclair was off somewhere xeroxing script pages for actors but either they had never materialized, or the actors lost them again.

The script reading was supposed to start at 9:30 but as everyting was late at BotCon I guess it was closer to 10 when we got started. There was some kind of miscommunication about wherether we or the auction would be first. I know there were people anticipating the auction first and that there was a change in plans, but guys please don't boo the VA's. It's not nice and it upset them. No one likes to be booed. Pete was very nice and offered to get the VA's (including Vangelus and myself) something to drink. Bumper and David opted for the alcohol (saying they might need it to get through this), Tara for water (saying that without a chance at rehersal she needed a clear head to get through this).

We had a few mic problems getting set up. Some weren't working and I was thinking I was going to share one with Bumper when Simon (I believe his name was), one of the BotCon staff, got one of the handheld mic stelling me he would be my mic stand for me. From right to left it was me, Bumper, David, Tara, Marty, and Vangelus. The reading went very well I think, the obvious highlight for me. Vangelus and I got to experience a con from the other side of things and I think the audience really liked it if their laughter and applause were anything to go by. I'm sure after the earlier miscommunication the VA's were pleased with such a warm reaction from the fans. From the comments I received from people I'm glad so many liked it.

Afterwards we got pictures with the cast and we all signed a wonderful drawing with all our characters on it. We also explained a few jokes from the script to the VAs that they didn't get. Marty didn't get the Star Wars joke, Bumber didn't get a Futurama joke, and I think Tara missed quite a few. Vangelus got to cash in his chips and I didn't stay for the auction not having had anytime to gamble anyway because of rehersal.

    Sunday
Last day. Who needs breakfast? Or lunch for that matter. I an not paying $5 for two chillidogs when I only want one thank you, besides, I brought snacks. ;-)

I stopped by the Hyatt gift shop upon learned from Chris Q last night that they had Hello Kitty dolls and selected one that Tara could best write on to sign. I waited in the autograph line again and hoped the VAs wouldn't be so late that I would miss the second new ep of TAS to be aired at the first pannel of the day. I got my script signed by all three VAs as we talked about last night. Tara signed my Hello Kitty doll for my boyfriend's sister who's mad about Hello Kitty right now. Tara told me her family shop was the first shops to import Hello Kitty merchandise into Canada back in the 80's and that originallly she'd be cast in the role of Melody (the bunny) but got swiched with the other actress at the last minute because they liked Tara's voice better for Kitty. The other actress wasn't happy about that. Tara and I still remembered the lyrics to the theme song and sang the first verse or so together.

I got to the TFA pannel in plenty of time for the new episode, Black Friday, and afterwards went back up to the autograph line to get my script signed by Matt, Derrick, and Marty (who's voice was finally starting to recover from last night.) I wandered around the dealers room caught up with Vangelus, we signed each other's scripts and talked to Trent and Greg who wrote this years script. Then along with Big Daddy Kai's big brother (sp?, is it written Kaye like David's name but pronounced differently?) we went down to the final Hasbro pannel then back up to the dealers room until they kicked us out, I managed to bargan a TFA BB for $15 and was told once again that Pete Sinclair wanted to see Vangelus and I for something before he pulled his ninja vanishing trick again. I thought he said something about interviewing us for the club magazine, but we just ended up signing Pete's script from the reading for him later at Champs that night and discussing the legal posibilites of getting Vangelus's taping of the script reading on youtube. I'd just like to extend a thank you to Pete and the other BotCon staff guys for their help thoughout the convention and trying to make this video a possibility for all to see if it's fessible.

We got our group TFW2005 picture and we headed down to Champs at the Hyatt. I got to lunch with Vangelus and his mom, Hi Q, StarsaberJ, Sol Fury, Draven and his lady, and more. I got to see Hi Q's wonderful Hearts of Steel BB made of paper, learn the origins of Somsac the Angry Spaceship, try the wonderful Angus Burger fry dip, see Draven draw Vangelus Prime and get high on coffee, see Vangelus's abridged drawings of the Hasbro pannel, and hang out with my friends and talk Transformers. I think we stayed there from about 4:00 to almost midnight.

    Monday
Awoke to the sound of a fire alarm at the Hyatt that turned out to be a false alarm. Finally found my way to the mall for breakfast without getting lost only to get lost on the way back out. Began the long drive back to Pittsburgh, stopping to see the Cincinnati butterfly conservatory on the way out of town. I managed to check one Ohio K-Mart before crossing over into West VA for TFA but I guess I was already out of the TFA toy range. Movie merchandise was all there was to be found.

Pittsburgh is colder than Cincinati. Sigh. I want Spring!

BotCon 2008 was my favorite yet (but I may be biased due to the whole VA contest thing). But being able to go again for the first time in two years was awesome and getting to perform with TF VAs was a dream come true. I can't wait for next year and look forward to keeping in touch with all the friends I made.

    Hi Anastasia,
It was wonderful meeting you at BotCon. Mike & I knew right off it would be you and Vangelis who won. I'm glad to hear you had such a good time doing it.
We both look forward to our next chance to attend BotCon and seeing everyone again.

    And reissue Dinobots?

I really do enjoy reading other people's BotCon reports though, there are parts that I was right there with them and then all of a sudden we are in different places in time, oh snap!
