I'm after movies that really can be much more enjoyed on Blu-ray rather on DVD. So you know things with explosions or great CGI and not drama's and romantic comedies.

Apart from the obvious like Avatar, what else is considered essential on Blu-ray?

As much as I loathe to admit it, one of my show-off Blu Ray movies is TFTM07. The big reveals (Blackout and Prime mostly) look absolutely superb.

    Iron Man is excellent too.

I'd also recommend Daredevil but that's more cos the Directors Cut is awesome :lol

Ooh, true. Dark Knight is excellent.

LOTR I'd pass on til the inevitable extended versions :)

Believe it or not, but I'd throw Rocky Balboa on my list. Both the traditional film and HD camera footage look great.

Right, I am tempted to get those as well but will wait to see if the extended cuts get BD. I'd also say the new Star Trek is great on BD as are the Next Genereation Movies.

Funny what comes up when you Google: "must own Blu ray movies."

I refuse to acknowledge Avatar as "essential" until the special edition is released in November.

My recommendations (other than those already mentioned):

    Wall*E
    Up
    Toy Story 1 and 2
(actually, all the Pixar titles released to date on BR look fantastic)
    Firefly
    Dark City (Director's Cut)
    Planet Earth

Those pretty much cover it for the well known ones. My brother even bought the red-headed-stepchild of the Pixar library "Cars" and said the BR treatment it got took it up a notch (I haven't watched my copy yet, though).

I'd also recommend Casino Royale (2006) Collector's Edition if you can find it. Surprised nobody's mention the Godfather BR releases

Speed Racer. The color palette is incredible on Blu Ray.

    Ignore Viceroy.

I agree with most of the recommendations in this thread. Star Trek, Dark Knight, Iron Man, both live action TF films all look good on Blu-Ray (well the TF films look good, shame about the lack of coherent plot)
Wall-E does as well and is a enjoyable film.

As a personal preference, I'll say Transformers (2007) but not ROTF...unless TF3 is so awesome it warrants owning all three.

Speaking of which, many have said Batman Begins + Dark Knight. Me, I'm waiting for the 3rd one to be released and hopefully they'll do some super-awesome-mega-complete-collectors edition Blu Ray boxed set for the whole trilogy (commentary please, Mr. Nolan!). Beside, if I wanna watch either BB or DK I know a few people I can borrow it from anyways :D

Preach! For me the second it comes out.

    It's Voiceroy, thanks.

And as for the Google mention -- the interwebs have been around long enough and with millions of people using it that if anyone has a question about anything, chances are it's been answered many times over. And a simple Google or Bing search will have your answer within the first few search results.

And I forgot to add "Independence Day" with my original list. Sure, it's got a silly plot (Jeff Goldblum saves the world with a Mac), but it looks so incredible on BR. And it's an audio feast for the ears too.
