Am I the only one who thinks that the theme for TFPrime sound VERY much like (read: almost exactly the same as) the theme for the latest Star Trek film?

    Just listen to these:

Star Trek Theme (resemblance starts at 0:40)

    TFPrime Theme

Not that I have anything against the music (it's awesome) but HOW did Orci and Kurtzman NOT hear this?

Definitely very similar, and I imagine it was intentional (would be kind of hard not to be). Do we know who's been working on the music for TFP?

Edit: Here we go, did a quick search, Brian Tyler is the show's composer:

Not at all surprising given what he's done before.

Orci and Kurtzman wrote the script for the 2009 Star Trek film. I think it may have been an intentional homage or nod to it. TF Prime is filled with hidden nods, just look at Starscream's torso -it's movie Starscream's head!

Brian Tyler - and, curiously enough, he also scored ST Enterprise...

That makes sense. And what is it with Hasbro and chest/crotch faces lately? They're getting kind of disturbing. *coughjoltcough*

You DO realize Orci and Kurtzman were/are the main writers for both Star Trek and TF: Prime?

That is my point in asking how they could have missed it. They worked on the movie; they must have been really thick to miss the similarity. Unless, of course, they did it on purpose, which seems to be the general consensus.

Actually they're the producers, while Nicole Dubuc, Marsha Griffin, Joseph Kuhr and Steven Melching are the writers. Meaning they definitely knew of the similarities, if not made the decision themselves to make it so similar.

I just took it to mean it was on purpose.
Ah, my bad. I just knew they were heavily involved.

Jeeze, where did they get credited? I just keep seeing Orci and Kurtzman listed as writers. Kinda sucks for credit not going where it is really due.

I was a big fan of Michael Giacchino's theme for Star Trek 2009, and I did notice the similarity in the music. However Prime's theme is not a direct lift, it diverges and creates its own unique sound. Trek, to me, makes me feel like I'm ready to jump to lightspeed and kick some nacelles in an infinite universe of opportunities, while Prime's theme feels more like a musical statement of courage and hope in the face of impossible odds.

Maybe not...in the fact they worked on the latest ST movie (and isn't there another coming?) I would imagine they could have acquired permission to use any score or part of score they liked... although I admit they are similar, but they are different enough for me.. I love the TFPRime score. :dj

Everytime I hear the main theme I think that the Enterprrise will zoom by.

I think I'm the only one who doesn't hear the similarity. Maybe I'm listening to the wrong parts.

You're right, it's basically the same music but it's not Plagiarism. They wrote the script for the latest Star Trek film and for Transformers so it's not unlikely that they the would have some of the rights to the music as well.

Now if they were using music from something they hadn't worked on then it would be Plagiarism. And I do recall them talking about the radio for Movie Bumblebee because they could only use sound clips that were in the public domain or that they had bought rights for before they could put them in the movie. So these guys know what they're doing when it comes to copy right laws.

No, they would have NO rights to the music. They don't even have rights to their script. It's all owned by Paramount!

I knew I'd heard it before somewhere.
Although that kind of thing is happening all the time

There's about 10 seconds worth of similarity and 2m30s of totally not the same.

I actually prefer how the TFP theme stays in the same key*, whereas ST's changes at the 0:44 mark.

*I think that's what it's called. My music theory is waaaaay rusty.

No, you're not. I fucking love the Trek score, and this doesn't sound anything like it. Certain cues maybe, but it's almost like the notes are backwards.

To my ears, they sound almost identical. when I first heard the theme for Prime I wondered why they were using the Star Trek score!

Nope. It almost sounds like it's going to be the same, but then changes instantly.
