How long do the people he see usually remain dead?

Not a surprise. One of these pops up every couple of years, with similar circumstances. It's a sad testament to the efficiency of self-paying bills and general neighbor disinterest.

Makes you wonder how many mummies are still out there, just watching TV.

He meant that most of the people he examines have not been dead for that long - people who've died in the past 24 hours, perhaps, as opposed to a year ago.
