It is about the attention and being people's people that is Swerve. He may love shannix but Swerve loves people more. Swerve is not above watering down a drink but unlike Swindle he will not kill for a shannix. I don't think Swerve could done what Swindle did to Caminus in Combiner Wars.

    Definitely.

Though I'd like to see an Autobot Swindle though.

Isn't Rattrap the closest we have to an Autobot Swindle right now?

No. Rattrap is about coming out on top. Swindle is best describe as a Star Trek Ferengi where he is probably following the Rules of Acquisition instead of Gold Press Latinum it is Shannix. Rattrap is more like a lobbyist where he wants political favors not monetary ones. Rattrap rather serve someone as powerful than being the main man. If the main man is like Starscream it will bring out the worse in Rattrap whereas Optimus Primal brought out the best.

Actually, it looks like a large part of what we know about Rattrap's opportunism may be an act.
He's a Prowl's snitch and quite probably a part of the Autobot intelligence for Primus knows how long. At this point we know that Prowl likes a long term planning and went even as far as placing agents in DJD.

Rattrap's first meeting with Starscream and being soo jaded and disappointed with the Autobot cause seems now strangely convenient. It may be that he was following Prowls orders back then. It may be that while Rattrap is not the moral pinnacle, he's just a professional spy, not an opportunist.

It would be very Prowl to place a snitch next to a someone who had a chance of being elected ruler of Cybertron.
Even helping Starscream with framing Scoop plays into this scheme. Scoop never was a real contender to the title, so he was expendable. Only real competitors were Metalhawk and maybe Bumblebee. Bumblebee not being very charismatic and being an Autobot, and Metalhawk being completely oblivious how lethal Starscream can be.
It would be very logical for Prowl to calculate that Starscream has the biggest chance of success and place an agent next to Screamer "just in case".

Heck, even aside from calculating a higher chance of success, as long as Prowl thought there was a *reasonable* chance of success, he'd have a plan.

Hm, I wonder if he had a Metalhawk plan or just figured 'hawk was close enough to acceptable....

Stuff like that is why I really like Barber, he plans ahead ^^

    "Would?"

It was clear that this was the case and always had been the instant Rattrap got the call from Prowl.

Hubcap is still untouched, isn't he kind of a Swindle-y character?

    Yup.

And if one browses through the bios for Rattrap's toys on tfu.info, two of them are referencing Rattrap as either an intel or a recon specialist. There are only five versions of his bio in total. The first one is a discontinued pre-Beast Wars continuity toy bio, one of them mentions only his upgraded abilities with no word about his characterisation or function, and the another one mentions only his personality. So it's kinda buried in canon that his function is supposed to be either a spy or a scout.

Chances are that Barber was planning it from the start when this character showed in books and it's not a recent switch of direction.

Actually, you bringing that up, I do seem to remember him mentioning spying and scout work in the show. Plus there is the one episode where he kinda teams up with Megatron and infiltrates the Predacon base, and sabotages everything while pretending to be the ally to Terrorsaur.

I do like the idea that Rattrap is playing Starscream for a fool on Prowl's behalf, especially since I could start liking him, instead of being offended.

Speaking of the mural: has anyone identified everyone on it yet? There's a few I couldn't name on there.
