Can someone help me out? I'm looking for a good place to download MP3s for my wife's MP3 player. She's worried about a lot of money and I'm worried about rip offs. So where is the best place to down load from?

Sony store maybe, I think the average price is about 99 cents. If it is a cd you own just rip the cd.

...is it wrong that my first thought was "I wonder how many Mods are viewing that thread?" :lol

    Legal route, go iTunes.

If it's not an iPod, iTunes won't work. All of the music Apple sells is broken, that way.

I'm from the "rip from CDs" school. I find CDex to be about the best program, for that.

You can burn CDs in iTunes and then re-rip them as MP3's. That strips the Apple DRM from them.

It's a pain in the ass, and I don't advocate actually doing it, but it's technically possible. I agree the best route is ripping your own CDs. You get to choose your own bitrate, and you don't have to deal with ridiculous DRM measures that almost every store is going to have.

As far as MP3 stores/sites, I really like emusic. But they cater almost entirely to independent artists, so if that's not your style it won't help much. They have a monthly plan where you pay a certain amount and are permitted a certain number of DRM-free MP3's. I believe 30 songs is $10 a month and 75 songs is $20 a month. Either is pretty good. They normally have a 25 song free trial, but here's a link to a 100 song free trial:
    www.emusic.com/iskin

Ignore the huge typeface that says it's for "your ipod"...they're regular mp3s and will work on any player.

Go to that Russian site that sells them for cheap. Oh wait. Uh, no political discussion allowed.

I agree with the buying CDs and ripping them. That way you've got a pretty hard copy too. But if you're really looking for a pay and download place I'm not sure. I wouldn't bother because it's likely to be crippled with annoying DRM that'll make it pretty much useless (well, depending on what you want to do with it).

Yes, but that's stealing. If you don't like the price they offer, don't buy it. If you like one song, buy the MP3 of it online. I freely admit that the RIAA is a pretty horrible group, but two wrongs don't make a right and all that. = P

Hmm, are there any decent FREE MP3 rip software? I have a load of CD's I want to convert to MP3, but I don't want to pay anyone more money. Or can anyone suggest decent software?
