Haha yeah, he's still two months out but I think I've also already decided Shockwave+ is my figure of the year! I've also already decided that OPv3 is figure of the year for 2019 haha ;)

Haha definitely agreed there. OP-3 is probably my top figure of all-time, even since back when he was just a hope of ours!

This slow G1 pace gets frustrating, and then I remember that we're getting awesome toys of characters from a 35 year-old cartoon, and I become rational again :lol

Haha YES! Btw, how's the s2 viewing going? The '86 Movie re-release, the new BB trailers, and Prowl+'s release ahead of a wave of "+" releases have really added fuel to fire for me. OPv3 and Hound news can't get here soon enough! (let alone Shockwave+ ;)  )

It is all kicking off, isn't it? Hopefully Figure King scans surface in a few hours and ignite the flames haha
Need to get back into S2, taking my sweet time with it, but no doubt some new G1 MP news will pump me back up!

I'm really looking forward to seeing the exact shade of purple of 29+ in-hand. It's darker than 29's, which is a step in the right direction, and I imagine like 29 it'll also look quite different under different lights. Wonder if it can approach the almost reddish-purple that Shockwave had on my old G1 cassettes. Either way, consider my MP Shockwave boxes more than ticked.

So, is there (even a slight) consensus that 29+ really is intended to be the most anime-accurate version (so far)? Seems like it to me, but I want to make sure I haven't missed sone piece of crucial information. Gotta decide whether to sell my original MP-29, ugh.

MP-29+ seems very accurate to lots of episodes.

His hands and chest are a little too pink for many scenes, though.

MP-29’s colour is accurate to at least one or two episodes (@Dean ML knows which ones).

If you don’t like stickers, then 29+ is superior.

29 is quite accurate to the infamous comic cover - it was most certainly the reference for the size of his eye, which was never that wide in the cartoon. Unfortunately many comic fans don’t appreciate this, as he scales too small for them compared to MP-36.

I personally plan to swap over the chest and hands between my 29 and 29+. In the episodes I remember Shockwave had the darker colour, but the less pink chest and hands. This will actually make my 29 even closer to the colouring of the animation model, on which his colouring is based.

Thank you @Sam! That is a huge help. It certainly seems like the true toon accurate version is somewhere in the middle. Guess I've still got some considering to do...may wait to read the reviews on this one first to see how he is in-hand.

Knowing Takara, this will not be the last update to the mold. I'd wait.

I definitely don't see Takara doing another cartoon-accurate version of Shockwave. Ever. The original was supposed to be toon accurate, and now 29+ is even moreso. Any future repaints could be grey, or even darker purple with silver toy insignia. I think the former is unlikely, and the latter even less so.

There's still plenty of times where 29+ is very accurate:

Many where 29+'s body with 29's hands and chest would be better:

Original animation model (notice the pinker hands and chest):

Looking a little closer to 29's colour here:

Some people have had a lot of fun with gif making. This one is truly brilliant :lol

Yeah, some of those screen shots definitely make 29+'s purple look spot-on. Whenever I watch an episode with him in it he appears to be more muted, but I think that's down to the inconsistent remastering. This definitely matches The Movie better which I generally consider a tie-breaker, haha. Now if it only cost the same as the original, I would have far less hesitation.

Thanks again for the detailed info, as always!!

It's kind of too bad because I absolutely love the purple on MP-29, just as a color, even though it is inaccurate. But my collection only has room for one of each character at the moment, sadly.

I'm keeping both versions of Shockwave. Both are cartoon accurate, as @Sam pointed out, although the plus release matches the cartoon on more occasions. A bit like Hot Rod and AKOM Hot Rod, who I also both have.

One version of each character is a good rule. I am somehow ending up with a smaller cast, but multiple versions of each one. And the worst thing is, once I swap over parts between 29 and 29+, I'm sure I'll also want a regular 29+ as well. And then maybe a regular 29 also? How many Shockwaves is too many?

Yup, when the mould is as good as Shockwave there's nothing wrong with having doubles. Just keep one beside your bed as a night light :thumb

Just remember, if my wife asks, Hot Rod and Rodimus Prime are DEFINITELY DIFFERENT CHARACTERS as are Megatron and Galvatron...!!
Yeah, it would be tough to have a mod'ed version and then not have the original version(s). Looking forward to pics of your combo Shockwave++!

I don't think my wife would appreciate that. :D

We've got a room which functions as hobby room/home office and I've got all my Masterpieces on display there. When I work from home, I've got a great view on them. And I can tinker with them during conference calls. ;)

The spare bedroom here functions as my home office, and I've got the MP shelves set up right above my desk :)  I have been known to mess around with my MPs from time to time during my online teaching - including using them as teaching tools.

My fiancee's pretty cool about the MPs though, she doesn't mind if one of them ends up in the bedroom (as long as they're facing away from the bed :lol )

This is kind of like people asking when they should upgrade their PC. There is never a "right time," because the next big thing is always right around the corner. You just need to jump when it's good enough or when you have a specific need.

I already had MP29, so most likely will be skipping MP29+ though it is very toon accurate

@Sam, have you reconoittered whether this is a relatively ‘easy’ swap for the stone-hands crew such as myself? Really like your idea but I’m always afraid I’ll screw things up ...

It's not too complicated. Of course, the hands are a super easy swap.

The chest is a little bit more tricky. You'll need a set of JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard) screwdrivers first of all, to make sure you don't damage the screws. Japan uses different kinds of screws from everyone else.
It'll involve removing the four screws from his back, to be able to get at the two screws that are holding in the chest piece inside. The problem is when you take apart his back the entire torso separates as his arms fall out, so you need to make sure you know how to position them inside before you close him up again.

Then there's the question of the gun-mode sight:

And the inside of the barrel, too. I'm not really sure if they need to be swapped over, but doing the sight will require punching out a pin. Swapping the pieces (four separate pieces) from the inside of the barrel is super easy, though.

Then, maybe it's better to keep the pinker gun sight so that it better matches his mini-gun:

Just having a look over all the photos we've seen lately:

It's amazing how much of a difference the smaller eye makes to me in evoking cartoon Shockwave more fully.

In some shots the paint doesn't look all that different from the og 29

And then in others it's like night and day:

When it comes to purple it's really all about lighting!

Also, I don't know how I missed this post:

The light-up gimmick is different! I really like it, it looks a lot more like someone shooting instead of someone warming something up in the microwave :lol

Hope that's really what we're getting. Not long now until November 24th!

Hell, after this Prowl+ ordeal I'm just hoping I can get Shockwave+ by December 24th! Actually thinking about holding off on opening him till Christmas morning since G1 Shockwave was a Christmas gift ('85!), but if he were to have any problems and needed returning I wouldn't want to wait that long.

Still hoping this guy has painted purple, but I doubt it. Yet all + releases so far including Prowl have more paint coverage than the originals so the precedent's strong. Just about a month to go till we find out! :)
