Talking about just the bot, not the trailer.

Other than the color variations, are there any other differences between the releases ?
Original release, dvd release, other, etc?

20th Anniversary: Short smokestacks, painted scorch marks. Black or silver gun.
MP-01: Long smokestacks, clean deco. Silver gun
Movie edition: red is more orange-y, silver stripes are now white, yellow vents on head, blue gun with yellow vents
MP-04: Same as MP-01, except with the trailer, of course.

That 1 has the short smokestacks. You should also grab the long smokestacks on ebay. I think they're less than $10 and in my opinion makes prime look a lot better.

Why so much hate for movie edition?
The matte paint job looks great, the colours are bold, and whilst the blue gun is inaccurate it looks fine. Okay, the talking stand is nothing to write home about, but I think that it is the nicer of the domestic versions, and if it had full size smokestacks it would give MP-01 a run for its money. And BTW, truck mode stripes are silver on it.

I know the smoke stacks are different but, that's a given.... stoopid Hasbro safety rules >.<

I've got an MP, 20th and an Animation one and the MP wins out for me. The other two lose for short stacks (and I'm buggered if I'm going to pay out more and fit replacements myself), I'm not fond of the 'damage' paint on the 20th, and the 'red' Animation one is eye-burningly horrible. Not to mention the half-assed job done with the voice on the base.
Depends what you like I guess.

It's not Hasbro's safety rules, its State and Federal Child Safety laws that all toy makers must comply with.

Isopropyl Alcohol (sometimes known as rubbing alcohol, commonly sold in pharmaceuticals as a disinfectant) and a cotton swab.

Paint damage should be minimal to nonexistant, as the scorch marks are all on unpainted plastic parts. Except for the bit on the stomach grille, but it takes a lot more effort for IPA to affect chrome, if at all.
