I'm doing this big guy on commission. I had originally contracted to do something totally different, but then I spotted the A-TEAM van at Target and the next thing I knew I was a week into working on this project. Luckily, we both agreed that this had potential, and we altered the deal.
The A-TEAM movie toys are to scale with G.I. Joes, so he's about 50% bigger than would be a 1/24 scale vehicle (Alternator/ Human Alliance scale.) I tired my best to keep a usable cab with seats, but the transformation just wouldn't allow it. He's going to get opaque windows to hide the shoulders in the cab.
There's really no way to make a guy transform into a van without having a bit of a gut, but in Ironhide's case, I think it works. I think the huge lower legs help to balance things out. He's going to be getting bigger feet to stomp around on as well.
The van mode looks a little saggy because all of the inner structure isn't there yet, and not everything is glued.

I'm going to get the head working soon. As for the mechanism I'm considering, think Laser Optimus Prime, but up from the back.

This is from an earlier point in the build, but it shows how the arms sit in there. The doors don't work this way any more.

His final paint job will be red.
Yes there will be a Ratchet.
All comments and crits are welcome.

I know it's my own opinion, but I think the lower legs should be modified... Possibly cut & hinged where the black meets the red line? You might have to make a hinge on the back-most portion of the sides so you can make room for the feet though... Then you can fold fold the 'top' portion of the van's sides in front of the legs? I think they're just too 'deep/long', as they stick out so much further than the feet do...

Otherwise, I think the 'gut' works fine, and am really enjoying what I see so far!
While I know you said he's going to get painted "Ironhide Red", I think it might be humorous to see him with a "B.A." head & gold chains before you get that far... LOL!

it looks like the a-team van. If you can't make it iron hide you can at least make it Mr. T

    Thanks for the replies!
After over a month on this, neither can I! XD
I strongly considered this and I was planning on doing it, but I had to drop it for structural reasons. This is one of those builds where I had to do a lot of compromising to get it to work. I justify it by the IDW design having big flaps on his legs too. Not quite as big as these, granted.
You think it looks like the A-Team van? I don't see it. XP

I'll take some comparison pics soon. I had him parked on my table next to MP Prime and the Ecto 1 for a while, and it was the coolest parking lot ever.
I still have the sound chip that the van came with, but it would be a little... incongruous coming out of Ironhide. Sadly, "Pity the fool" is not one of the phrases.
    Much thanks for the feedback.

Damn that 'structural integrity', it must be the bane of all customizers! :lol
Thanks for the quick response, and while it's a shame; I understand the reasoning why! I am still look forward to seeing him finished!

    Oh Yeah!!! :D

The other day I found some in a TRU & I thought to myself "Can you imagine him reshelled over an Alt?" & Tom_Servo has exactly the same idea... :lol  But his scale is as big as an MP Prime? I hope he's not a giant compared to the other alts...

That's a good question TBS, but I think the scale is a bit off... He's using the MP Prime as the base for the figure, which would make the van HUGE compared to the other Alts...

The Jazzwares' A-Team van (that can be found in stores now) was made to fit the 3 3/4" scale figures (think GI Joes), but I don't know what 'scale' that would make the van... The Alt/Binaltech scale was, uh; 1/25th scale?

This is looking cool! i have to agree about the legs being too big but there are certain compromises you can't let go... & that gut does actually work!
