Just a basic repaint of Masterpiece Grimlock. The only modification was taking out the LED function, and adding articulated hands. I also removed all of the "move the tail, head moves" mechanisms, because they were a pain, and I feel they hindered the poseability of the figure. Gave him a down and dirty paint job, because, let's face it, Grimlock should not be "shiny" under any circumstances! I added longer handles to his gun and sword to allow for his new hands to grip them. This guy will be up on the e-bay today! Tanks for looking and enjoy!
well it's an awesome paintjob... but even though I don't like the dinobots this rulezz!! how on earth did you do the rust detailing so perfect! ... tips.. tut please
I really like the paint job on this one, as it's a very subtle but noticeable touch. I'd also like to hear your description of the painting processes you're employing now. As far as the right hand goes, what all did you have to do to articulate the right hand? It doesn't seem like it would be too involved. Great work, and thanks for continually sharing it with us here
Thanks all! I am glad you like him. SQ7: as far as the hands go, I just replaced them completely with the hands that were on the 2007 movie Prime. I think they are some of the best articulated hands for big figures that I have found! I am going to let a big secret of mine out of the bag here, so you guys have to promise not to tell anybody. For the rust effects that I use, I mix up a little concoction I learned about long ago. I use some 40% Isopropyl rubbing alcohol (do NOT use any higher percentage than that,) I scrape and grind some brown chalk into dust, and then mix it with the alcohol. Keep it in a sealed container, and shake it up really well before you use it. Apply with a pointed brush. It will go on looking wet, and will feed into the crevices and details, but when the alcohol evaporates, it leaves behind a nice chalky "rust." Make sure you seal it up wih a nice flat clear coat, and voila! I hope that helps! Thanks for looking!
hell yes!! thnx it makes a lot of sense !! wow have to try that out sometime... maybe on my first Devy
Yeah, I certainly don't blame you for going that route with the Prime hands. I was a bit let down that the right hand of Grimmy isn't articulated due to the LED gimmick. As it is, it doesn't look like it would be too hard to modify. Hey bud, I really appreciate you continually sharing with us here. You remain among one of my favorite artists over the many years I've been into kitbashing. If you (or anyone) ever wanted to make some painting tutorials, I'd be honored to resource them here
