Thought I'd strike while my Sideswipe thread is still warm, and take the opportunity to post this guy. It's from 18 months ago but I'm still very fond of it. This was my first ambitious bit of kitbashing, which I started working on almost as soon as the oversize Soundwave KO came out (I have a secret passion for oversized KOs!). Again, you might have seen me post this custom on other forums like Sector 70/TFormers/KOtoys...

Main goal was to make the figure as toon-accurate as possible. Looking at the animation model it was clear that the mid-section between the chest and the hips would be a huge benefit to his proportions, so I took the figure apart and worked out that it could be done, if it collapsed into the hips for transformation. Nice to see this has since become a standard custom-Soundwave feature! ;)  This along with a scratch-built cassette compartment and opening door (which holds two ordinary size G1 tapes) was by far the most work in this build.

My other addition to the design, which really improves the look of his legs, is shin pieces (which slide up into the knee to allow the feet to fold away).

Oh yeah, and his chest screen can be swapped out for different displays!

My only critique is that the upper arms look to small/thin. Other than that, it's perfection.

still love it. the collapsing waist was so smart, you're the guy I talked to and got that idea from on tformers in fact. one of my favorite parts of this is the upper arms. Although a little too thin, it's great how they allow his arms such dynamic poses.

That...is SUPREMELY bad-ass. I'd LOVE to have that thing.

Also, I do have to agree that the arms around the elbow area do look really thin, but I think that might be able to be fixed if you built up the side of the elbow closest to the chest so it looked a little more like the outside of the elbow. That way the arm looks more filled out and nothing like articluation or transformation should be affected. Other than that...it's amazing. Simply amazing.

    Cheers guys :)

For what it's worth I completely agree that the biceps are too thin. They are literally taken wholesale off Alt Skids (chosen because they fitted inside SW's shoulder part with very little work, and give a double-jointed elbow so he can reach for his eject button etc). There's a revolving joint on the bicep though, just inside the shoulder, so some rethinking would have to go into things if I bulked up the biceps. Oh well... this was my first big project, and frankly I wasn't even expecting to finish the darn thing! :lol

I was about to say the biceps were a bit thin. Then I saw that it transformed.

    Holy shit.

    Work in progress pics...
The shin is a sliding piece of styrene on the inside of the lower leg, with a stopper across the top and a bar on the outside for purchase when extending down. Note also the flat piece of plastic glued to the underside of the upper leg - this is a piece cut from behind the knee at the top of the lower leg (to allow knee bend). Positioned as shown it retains almost the same location in alt mode.
The midsection is made from styrene. In the third picture you can see how the white styrene actually fits carefully into the existing chest and creates a new interior floor; a slim front ledge meets flush with the sides in the gap where the original chest door went. On top of this another sheet of styrene was added to the chest, this time the full size of the upper body (with hole for chest compartment and smaller hole top left for the walkman's 'counter button'). This has inner walls dropping all the way into the figure (on which the new scratch-built cassette compartment rests - it folds out along a curved slot). Two springs attached to the base of the new midsection allow it to pop up during transformation. The springs contract into the crotch section between the legs, while the midsection sits inside the waist.

That is awesome. I wish I had something more coherent to say, but I seem to be stuck at "whoa, awesome."

I remember this from Sector70--it's an excellent piece, man! I may need to hit you up for some tips on that waist mod for my Classics Soundwave (the TRU exclusive). I'd like to do something similar to make it better at some point. Keep up the great work, my friend!
