I'm toying with the movie style... It's harder to get a handle on this properly than I figured, at least in terms of making the finished product not look like a skull wrapped in tinfoil with googly eyes.

I started with Grimlock, but I kept editing more and more parts of the original head out till all that's left is the vague shapes of the faceplate and some abstracted antennae. He's somewhere between the Autobot "WHEE MOVING PARTS!" aesthetic and the "RAAAAGH POINTY FEAR ME!" Decepticon look. Not the cleanest pencils ever, but it's shiny.

No idea what colors I should throw on this thing.

well, it doesnt even bea the slightest resemblance to grimlock even by movie standards, but its kind of getting there in terms of grasping the movie look in general... not quite the right balance between detail and business though. if you want to see a perfect example of the movie aesthetic, just take a look at bumblebee's illustrations of errrrr bumblebee

perhaps removing some of the bits around the edges would help.....

i can definitely see grimlock like that, although kj is right, it's a little busy around the edges. but still TOTALLY AWESOME!!!! in terms of colours, i think dark blue and white or yellow and grey; but that's just me.

Eh, it's about as close to Grimlock's G1 head as Bumblebee is to his, but you are probably right about it being busy. Granted, all the details on the sides of the head aren't supposed to be along the same plane, but I think some details aren't streamlined enough to fit with the movie look. The three faceplate panels would probably stay, since it's really the last overt vestige of G1 Grimlock, but the antennae and forehead might get a reworking.

Some colors thrown, sticking mostly to G1 Grimlock's head colors, but with some extra red and new silver.

Like most of the movie designs, too convoluted imo. :/ But it's at least easier to make out facial features than with some of the concept art we've seen.

Doesn't quite say Grimlock to me though and if that's what you were going for then it didn't work... :/

I do appreciate your drawing qualities (better than mine), it looks pretty professionally drawn and coloured, but I don't think it lives up to what you were going for. :)
