I don't know if the Piranacon listed is a good gauge of worth. It's the time-old argument that says just because someone wants a price for something doesn't mean they're actually going to get it. For example, I could list my G1 Windcharger for $20 grand right now.

I think the most "viably" expensive TFs out there are fellas like MISB Grand Max or the Lucky Draw guys, and they fetch up to a few thousand bucks.

If you get a figure AFA graded and it's still sealed in it's box, the price could go up substantially.

--> This. Transformers are meant to be free. Anyway the most expensive TFs I've ever seen are the Luck Draws. You can't AFA them as most of their boxes are white and window-less.

I've always looked at AFA as a way to make artificial rarity.

It is not so much that it seals the figure. Although I am a release them from thier plastic prison kinda guy.

AFA is bogus because you get a $15 figure graded by them and bang it is worth $1500.

This is also something that can kill the value of TFs over all. Just like the Beckett did for hockey cards. AFA brings light to the fact that TFs are worth something. This makes the collectablility increase but the increase is due to scalpers. Eventually the market gets flooded and crashes.

The only thing TFs has over Sprts cards is that only one company owns the rights to TF where as anyone can make a hockey card.

AFA is meanlingless and pointless. Who is to say what the condition of your figure is?

I used to think so as well, but after having my Dinocassettes AFA'd, I was stunned by the level of quality, attention to detail, and care in the way it was graded and prepared. I found it a very satisfying experience, with super-professional handling in everything from communication to packaging.

It's certainly not something I'd wish do on a regular basis, but if you've got a couple of really special items you'd like to preserve, it's worth it, from my perspective.

    QFTMFT!

AFA has no real authority on anything, just because they grade a toy and slap an overindulgent price tag does not make it worth any more than it is.

Some guy looks at your figure seals it in a plastic case, slaps a sticker on it with the grade and whammo Your figure is now worth thousands.

It's only worth thousands if some shmuck offers to buy it at that price. Don't like AFA, don't buy an AFA product.

I've got a few AFA products that I bought on eBay (I haven't graded any of my own), but I actually bought them at prices BELOW their nominal value. I bought AFA 90 TFC Insecticons & Blitzwing for $100 a pop, when a normal un-AFA figure would have cost $150 typically. Nobody ended up bidding on it, and I got lucky with the win. No way would I have bid anything higher than an un-AFA'd value.

Based on your responses, it seems unlikely anyone could change your mind (nor am I really interested in doing so), but you may find it helpful to learn about how the process actually works:

I do not deny the process. I am sure they get out their magnifying glass and grade the box meticulously.

I am just against grading in general because it perverts the product in question. Once again look what Beckett did to the Sports Card industry.

And the mark up on AFA grades figures are ludicrous and even you can not deny that.
