So I was reading the Sparkeater issue last night and something occured to me. The Sparkeater physically eats the spark with his mouth. Why would you need to eat something which is basically a bit of magic ball lightning when you could just absorb it? Interesting...

Maybe she needs some CNA from other transformers to make baby sparks.

 

Without saying one goddamn word about the rest of this discussion, parthenogenesis is practiced by biological females.

Of course, some species that practice it are composed entirely of females, others are hermaphroditic, others change sex during their lifetime...

Well, we don't know that. Sparks could actually be contained in some kind of crystal form (I think this is how they were depicted in Energon). It may not just be a will-o-wisp.

Or maybe it's like asking why a vampire would bother drinking blood when he could just hypothetically absorb it through his pores. Or shooting a house with a flamethrower and asking why it didn't just "absorb" the fire into its furnace. Why would we assume that all energy can just be "absorbed" magically through any appendage, despite having specialized organs for doing so?

Yes, but if you're reproducing within yourself, creating new life out of a sealed system, then you aren't female. You're some kind of hermaphrodite... or maybe some solitary entity we don't have a proper name for). Again, this makes the concept of binary sexuality pretty meaningless... and of course, you also have examples like earthworms, who are hermaphrodites, but still reproduce sexually, as a means of sharing genes. But without outside fertilization, you're really no more male or female than a cell that divides itself.

I was waiting for someone to quote Jurassic Park. But if you spontaneously change sex (as the dinosaurs did in that fiction), then that means that it is still an element of sexual reproduction. They weren't just pumping out eggs with no fertilization... a certain portion of the population just trans-sexed, which reverts things back to traditional binary sexuality.
