hmmmm...free online service...so else said they were gonna do that...and only now this was brought up, not at E3....hmmm

and no HDD, they want you to say it on the network (as long it holds up on their end)....not really a good thing, cause when they crash because of a virus (which i think they will most likely get at least once), you've possibly could of just lost everything.

Sounds like they're doing the same thing as Nintendo is doing with WiFi connection on DS. But with the addition of a marketplace like 360 and iTunes. I was thinking PS3 was going to have something like Xbox Live with dedicated servers and all. :(  Oh well, its free though.

Dedicated Servers are likely to be publisher run, which I do beleive is the same as X-Box Live.

I thought it was all centralized with MS, with the exception of FF? I'm not sure though.

Anyhow, this is good news. I thought I remembered rumors that MS would be heading in this direction and focusing more on advertising to cover the costs?

X-Box games use a mixture of MS servers for matchmaking (not that that really happened so often on regular X-Box), dedicated servers which are at the very least heavily subsidised by publishers, and "stealth" client/host connections.

Dedicated servers are an exception, I beleive.

360 ups the stakes considerably as pretty much every stat is tracked.

Streck may know more specifics, however.

All the servers for Xbox Live - matchmaking, in-game, and otherwise - are now entirely owned and operated by Microsoft. Even EA, who previously insisted on their own hardware, came on board after they failed to eliminate their quality-of-service issues.

Jebus. The bandwidth must be terrifying.

But a smart move by MS. LIVE360 is staggeringly good.

For the record, Halo 2 is run off of a host Xbox. No servers of any kind.
