The bold things in the article are what scare me. I see alot of shortages and defective units coming from this. If you're looking to get a PS3, you better get a damn good long warranty on it.

for comparison, does anybody remember the percentage yeild that 360's chips gave? I remember it being lower than they wanted, but I dont remember it being as low as this...

You know, I'm not entirely sure the top IBM guys would be divulging that kind of information. Seems a little... wrong. Just from a business standpoint.

    Eh.

The comments under the article reveal more information more pertinent to the PS3.

ok...this aint good news one bit...now my chances of getting a PS3 had dropped in half (around 25% chance of getting one).

...$600 for a console that has crap in it....WTF.

I'm not exactly trying to defend Sony here but saying one of their products will have reliabillity problems is kind of like saying the sky is blue isn't it?

Does that really need another anti sony thread just to say it?

Maybe they figured that it's better to do so now, than later when they could get a lot of shit over it messing up in things. Like reeves said, it's being used in medical & defence stuff, and if it blows in THAT, it could be lawsuits ahoy. I see it as IBM basically saying "the chip is awesome, but caveat emptor".
What worried me is the possible faliure rate for PS3s. If they get a rep for unreliability early on, it'll do the system no end of damage. Sony need to only use processors that are fully functioning, or buying a PS3 could turn into a reliability lottery.

Maybe. But as is said in the comments, Sony have their own plant pumping out the Cell chips. They might get a better yield there. Who knows. IBM are pressing them for a different market. Again, the waiting game :)

As mentioned earlier in the thread, many have learned the hard way that buying a sony console is already a "reliability lottery". Even so, this news about Cell doesn't really tell us much about how it would actually affect the PS3.

Just another reason to not buy a PS3 on launch, if ever.

I still may get one someday, but not after a major price drop and LOTS of research into other people's experiences.

Whilst it's certainly worrying, it's not as bad as it may seem.

Remember, as Twin Twist says, Sony's chips are being made by themselves, hopefully they'll fix this issue before launch.

Also, despite the horror stories, Sony products aren't that bad. I've had TVs, consoles, PCs, cameras and camcorders and they've all survived. When you apply this level of scrutiny, you're bound to see issues with an unfinished product, especially when the manufactuer is so open about their components and methods.

Having said that, the price still puts me off. I want a Wii.

Many more concerns about this system... I've never been one to buy a PS on it's release day, in fact, I bought both the PSX and PS2 near the mid to end of their life cycles and (knock on wood) they've both tough systems, even though I've heard a lot to the contrary.

I've always been Nintendo-first, Sega/Sony second, and this generation will be no different, I believe. But, if the systems end up as bad as the rumours, I might have to change my gameplan (pun intended).

I'd say odds are PS3 won't be as bad as some of the rumors, but not as good as any of the hype.

I figure I'll just hold off for awhile getting one. Planned on it that way for awhile. With so much new tech, I figured I'd wait for some the "kinks" to get worked out. I'd like to get one eventually, but will probably get a 360 first.
