Ok, my mom has always been a bit of a germaphobe, but lately she quite often stands at the kitchen or bathroom sink just washing her hands over and over, and while she does this she's completely in tears. I have no idea what brought this on, and when I tried to talk to her about it she just screamed at me to leave her alone. I'm not really sure what to do about it. Do you guys have any ideas? Thanks.

I did a little google research

Sounds like a clear cut case of OCD.I mean nearly every person has OCD to some degree. But what you're describing sounds pretty major league

Other then professional help I doubt any of us can suggest anything.

Also unless SHE sees a problem she won't go for help

go to google and search "continuously washing hands,OCD" you'll see what I mean

Out of curiosity, is your road-rage uncle on your mom's side or your dad's? No reason...

Road raging uncle haha, I have one of those but he's not blood.

Just say " Mom wtf , you're freaking me out man"

Make dinner one night and get it out of her. If she feels like she's being taken care for a minute then she might give in and want a shoulder to lean on while she opens up to whats bothering her. Maybe remind her of stuff you did that made her feel dependant on you in the past. Then she may trust to depend on you too listen.
Or just start the whole conversation about you seeing her in the bathroom crying once you think you have a shot of getting some info.

Not professional help, but that's what I would try with my mom. Soften her up a little before I try and pry it out of her.

Good luck man, hope it's nothing serious.
Hopefully it's just a woman thing lol

Thanks "Doctor," I didn't know you graduated through Google Med.
Seriously, before jumping to any diagnoses, find her in a good mood and just talk to her. Maybe all she needs is an ear.

A good point; have any siblings or people from the neighborhood turned up missing recently?

She is a bit OCD about germs and such, as I said, she's always been a germaphobe, but it seems to be getting bad lately, and it's leaving her in tears for whatever reason. Kind of weird to see her so freaked out for seemingly no reason.

Anyway, Chaos Muffin and Fresh, thanks for the advice. I may try that. I wasn't sure talking to her would work since I tried already and she just snapped, but perhaps I just have to find the right time. Thanks.

Butz...the road rage/pothead uncle is on my mom's side. Thanks for remembering about that, haha.

Any other history of mental illness on that side of the family? No offense- theres a long history of mental illness in my family, coming from my dad's side (one of my dad's uncles, for example, once built a brick wall directly behind his front door and got arrested in the Vatican for trying to force his way in to give the Pope a message).

There are many "colorful" personalities on both sides of my family, but I just figured all families, and most people, have their little quirks so I'm not reading anything into it.

Because it's not really funny, that's why. See, sometimes people have problems that are serious, and they like to talk about them on here to either feel a little bit better, or even get objective advice. Just put yourself in the person's position and see if you would like to have someone making fun of it.

My OCD kicked up yesterday. While on a 20 minute walk with my wife, I was so preoccupied by making sure to not step on any cracks that I didn't listen to one word she said. But I won! I didn't step on any cracks! Everyone in the world must be so proud of me.

Usually I just have to check the iron about 5 times before I leave for work. OCD is messed up, and I only have a very minor case of it.

It's weird, something in your mind makes you dedicated to completing the task. Only the task is something completely unnecessary. Like washing your hands 12 times in a row.
When it is interupted, you feel anything from uneasy, to completely pissed off. Unless you complete it, it will be on your mind for a while.

I am guessing your mom is embarrassed about it. Talking to her when she is calm is best. Try to let her do the talking, and reassure her that many people live with OCD. I can laugh about mine because it is so minor that it is silly, but a lot of people really struggle with it.

I know it sounds a little mean, but have you tried turning the water off hehe

Man she'll go crazy. Kidding man llol dont do it.
I love messing with my parents but yeah that's a little crazy :lol

And dont feel bad, alot of moms have their unique moments like that. My mom used to get mad and throw frozen steaks at me :lol
I was a little shit though and deserved the beatings haha, but still it sucks when they throw the supper at you.

Maybe she was just cutting onions and had onion juice on her hands and the onions were making her cry.

    The onions are to blame.
