It's nails on a chalkboard to me.

If you want a new character in the game, you want a new model. It's not called a skin. A skin is what you put on top of the model. All those color choices your are choosing? THAT's a skin. Choosing Sideswipes chest? THAT's a model.

Whew. Got that out of my system. Now I can just go back to wincing when people use the incorrect term... For a while anyway...

    As you were.

No, the fact that I've said it at least twice before. Hehe. I'm getting kind of inside joke level fame about it.

I wonder why people say skins instead of models, then laugh at us for calling them models. Makes complete sense.

Yeah, seeing people mix those up bothers me too, but I haven't corrected anyone on it.

I hate when people call the new content 'skins'. The only true skin in this game is the G2 Bruticus, everything else is entirely new models and content.

That makes me wonder about the Havoc Pack, though. We all know the characters were already on the disk, but maybe they weren't complete yet until after the game went Gold? Like, the models for Blast Off and the others weren't compatible yet for MP?

I always assumed HMS wanted more content in the game than time allowed, such as the Dinobots and Insecticons. My guess is they were close, but couldn't finish because they had to ship off the game to be mass-produced, or for balance/sizing issues. During the time it took for the game to ship out, they worked on making the unreleased characters available for MP, with a fee to compensate for the added work.

It would be completely and utterly heartbreaking if I'm wrong though. I'm really hoping High Moon just couldn't finish everything they wanted to in time, and they didn't just finish it all then decide to lock it to make us pay more later.

It's just that...the game itself, the easter eggs, the references, everything seems like it's made for the fans, the big Transformers nuts who will recognize every quote and reference. It seems incredibly evil for High Moon to make a game for those TF nuts, and then charge them extra for things locked on the disc.

Wishful thinking, I suppose. Since I've not seen modded videos of Grimlock in some hacked version of MP, I'm just hoping he was only half-finished, and the DLC puts the other half in the game.

    lol nope.
What you're talking about is a TEXTURE.
Skins can refer to a whole model, often used to describe ones that are interchangeable like in Multiplayer games. (Like FoC)

It's even funnier to see someone trying to correct people when they're wrong in the first place. lol

Wrong. A Texture is a part of a skin (often times, skins have several texture layers). A skin is the whole texture thing.

The model is the 3 dimensional thingy you put the skin on. So what we basically get are new skins AND new models.

It's funny because of the irony. :)

In reality it's probably a little of column A (not 100% done) and mostly column B (wanting DLC). Once you realize DLC is not EVIL things make a lot of sense. They didn't "lock" content to force you to pay. They created extra content intending to sell it later. Remember that the game cost $20-30 million dollars and DLC is a good secondary way to recoup that cost. People whining over disk locked content (not calling you out specifically) is another thing that bugs me just not drastically so.

Do these next gen games have skins anymore, excluding alternate outfits? Games these days have really shifted to the 3D realm, characters are built in wire frames, each having its own unique look.

Yes they have skins. If they didn't have skins then they would looks like those gray CG prototype characters (although even that is a type of skin).

Exact opposite for me, every 3D Artist I've worked with call actual textures... well, textures, which makes sense really.
Skins can refer to a fully textured, rigged model as a whole.
Which is why when in other games that have DLC including more playable "characters" they say "5 Multiplayer Skins!" or whatever.

...Why do I feel like I'm repeating myself...?
