    Microsoft Expands Xbox 360 Warranty
Move to cost company over $1 billion.
    by Erik Brudvig

July 5, 2007 - Microsoft announced today that it is expanding its Xbox 360 warranty to three years for any customer who experiences the three flashing red lights error message that indicates hardware failure. All repairs will be made free of charge for three years from the time of purchase, including shipping expenses. Anybody who previously has paid for their consoles to be repaired related to three red light error message will be retroactively reimbursed. Other existing Xbox 360 warranties remain unchanged.

The warranty covers all Xbox 360 consoles. Whether you purchased an Elite, Core or regular Xbox 360 with a hard drive, the new expanded three year warranty holds from the date of purchase. Launch Xbox 360 consoles will now be under warranty from hardware failure until November 2008.

With reports of massive numbers of hardware failures, one can easily anticipate that this retroactive warranty update will not be cheap. In fact, Microsoft is going to take a $1.05 to $1.15 billion pre-tax charge to earnings for the quarter that ended on June 30, 2007 for anticipated costs that it will incur under the current and new enhanced warranty policies.

"The majority of Xbox 360 owners are having a great experience with their console and have from day one. But, this problem has caused frustration for some of our customers and for that, we sincerely apologize," said Robbie Bach, president of Microsoft's Entertainment & Devices Division. "We value our community tremendously and look at this as an investment in our customer base. We look forward to great things to come."

The company is making the move as a result of what the company views as "an unacceptable number of repairs to Xbox 360 consoles." Microsoft claims that it has identified a number of factors that cause the three flashing red lights error message and has made improvements to the console.

Whether the improvements result in less hardware failures remains to be seen. In the meantime, those with broken Xbox 360s can begin cheering.

    woohoo refund time

Microsoft Extends 360's warranty to 3 years

    As reported by TeamXbox.

Specifically, it's three years for the red ring of death.
They also say that if you paid to have your console repaired, they will reimburse you.

    It's about time Microsoft!

You posted the topic first so I post here. :)

Awesome news! I'm more glad everyday that I didn't go with Sony.

Perhaps one day I'll have reason to...but not in the foreseeable future.

By and large extended warranties are a waste of money.

I could see it almost being worth it what with recent reports showing a 33% failure rate and all. But even at that I took my chances. It's better odds than at winning at the blackjack table (50%).

The real question is, are the 360s being shipped and sold today fixed so that they never have this problem?

Also, is this warranty just for the red lights error, or does it cover everything?

Really, I've never gotten an extended warranty before, and never had a problem with any hardwear either. I only considered for the 360 because of all the reports of failure. Extended warranties are just scams.

Now if they'de just fix the thing from overheating and getting the red ring of death in the first place. That's what's keeping me from getting one. I was hoping that when the Elite came out the problem would be fixed, but no they used the same flawed design.

That's great for Microsoft to do. I had to exchange mine for the 3 lights but I used an in store warranty. Still, I respect MS for saying that the number of breaking systems is so much so that it's their design at fault, you would have to have all of Sony and Nintendos investors and executives hanging over a pool of acid before they admit their products have internal problems that aren't the dirty consumers faults.

Glad to see somebody in the industry puts their money where their mouth is. Now how about a big price cut like Sony so I can get talk my wife into getting one?

In terms of customer service, this was an utterly mandatory thing for them to do - but I'll give them their due credit, simply because there are innumerable companies, across all industries, that would never even consider doing something similar. This isn't leadership by example, but it's damn close.

This is great news and I can verify that it is true becaue I just sent my 360 back free of charge. They send you a white box in the mail you pack it up a and out it goes. They even sent a confirmation email saying they worked on it.
