If you bought music from Napster 2.0, Rhapsody, Yahoo! Unlimited, Movielink and Cinemanow, they won't play on Zune. Even though those are part of Microsoft's own developed "Play For Sure" program. The only site you can buy music from is the Zune music store. And Microsoft's new DRM prevents songs from the Zune store to be played on anything but the Zune, and this includes Microsoft's "Play For Sure" partner devices like the iRiver.

    Big surprise there.

I mean, this IS the company that's leading the effort to turn PC's into giant consoles by locking down the BIOS and OS.

    Trusted Computing, my ass.

Yikes. This "only with OUR system" bullshit is dumb, at least to me. It makes sense as way to make sure that you're bringing in money on the player AND the music side, but...I mean, does anyone else think that companies are handicapping their sales by doing this? I recognize that there are workarounds for getting any sort of music onto the Ipod, and I don't know much about the Zune, but...

If I was a 16 year old and I wanted one of these and I wasn't very computer savvy, the first thing I'd probably hit up against is the exponential cost of outfitting my music player with this stuff. After maybe one monthly bill of $40 or up for MP3 music, I figure most parents would say "No freakin' way."

Goodbye Zune! Thanks for the memories! Memory.

    Whatever. Goodbye.

I remember Sony tried this and within 3 months had to backpeddle and open the player up to play anything.

The only ipod killer would be a 20gb psp or ds lite.

What a depressingly pointless piece of hardware. :(  Right up there with the Mylo.

    Wacky. Stupid. Not interested.

Can it still play your own MP3s, or will it try to encode and destroy all those too?

    Hate and rage!!!! Blarghhh!

It will play MP3's you rip from your own CD's. However, anything with non-Zune DRM is locked out.

The only iPod killer... would be another Apple product.

Apple successfully defined how to setup an online music presence and for the most part do it right. iTunes isn't cheap, but with extra software you can use it with Windows Media Player.

Not a fan of Microsoft right now for several reasons. For every one good thing they do, ten more dumb-*** crackers crap like this happens. Oh well, iTunes FTW! :D

I cannot recall having witnessed the chirping of e-crickets all across the internet than I did when Microsoft officially unveiled the Zune this week.

I also noticed that the price was conspicuously absent from the unveiling. Wonder if that had anything to do with Apple's surprise slashing of iPod prices two days earlier?
