Hmm...Strange indeed. Could it be visitors from another world?!?!!? Nah.
Could it be an ungodly vaporous gas sickening the villagers?!?!? Nah.
My money's on that nasty-assty sulfurous gas. It always smells like farts mixed with bad eggs.

I was a little worried there until I read about the "sulfurous smell". You silly people, it's just a rotten alien space egg. Probably been in that Xenomorph punk's fridge for a year.

I've read suggestions (courtesy of the Bad Astronomer) that indicate Peru quietly acquired Scud missiles some time ago, and this could be the result of one that was misfired. It would explain more of the eyewitness reports, including the boiling water in the crater bottom (meteorites are generally cold - they're from space!), and even the physiological effects reported, due to the fuel used in Scuds.

Of course, it wouldn't explain stony iron meteorite fragments being found, but this is where (if I were a lesser man) I would start shouting coverup.

What if it was a meteorite that hit a colony of bacteria (or some other mundane organism) underground, and the impact uncovered them, and the heat gave them some energy to start reproducing and stuff, making it smell really bad?

    Ebay:
You do realise that when a item passes through our atmosphere it heats up?
And due to the speed it's traveling it'll still be hot when it impacts the ground?

I think it's alien doodoo, since it says the smell of sulfur was present in the meteor.

Geez, Mars, way to drop a deuce on Earth. :mad

    This makes me laugh.

Sliver was the Sharon Stone movie where she's in the apartment complex where people are being murdered (the one after Basic Instinct), Slither is the film you're thinking of, iirc.
