Did it get weaker in rotf? Like for instance, in rotf, it seemed that at the end of the forest battle, and in egypt when the tanks blew him apart, he was only firing blanks, and they weren't making contact, so was his cannon only for close range, or am I missing something?

His cannon is still very powerful. Not as powerful as when he used both arms to wield it, but stilll strong enough to tear vehicles apart and badly hurt/kill Autobots with it. In Egypt, we have a scene where Megatron fires out a series of quick-fire shots, which cause a literal wall of explosions.

Clearly, his Fusion Cannon's power depends on how he uses it and how much energy it charges before firing.

I think in general Megatron got weaker as the series went on. He was killed at the end of the first one and then rebuilt in a short amount of time, then He was royally beat up at the end of RotF. So it makes sense that he got weaker during the duration...

That makes sense. What doesn't kill you makes you stronger. Well, it killed Megatron, so now his cannon isn't that great.

As was said, he's probably able to decide how much energy actually goes into each shot he fires.

Yeah, his arms kept getting blown and ripped-off, too...considering they used to form his cannon it's no real surprise that it was successively downgraded until it was finally an altogether external weapon and no longer necessarily a part of his body.

His cannon might be STRONGER, in the first movie as he combines both arms and it blows Optimus away flipping right into a building.

In ROTF during the forest fight he hits Optimis with the one handed canon and it has almost the exact same effect.

His aim might have gotten worse though.

Considering one shot of his cannon made Optimus fly some fifty meters backwards, I wouldn't say so.

That's pretty interesting. I thought he always needed both arms to form the cannon...
