So long as he has a big honkin cannon on his arm, he's probably fine with stuff.

He likes to try different things, does what he wants and won't be hassled by "the man."

Megatron is a loose-cannon cop who doesn't play by the rules.

Megatron don't need no stinking alt-mode. And there's no "identity crisis" when you're a weapon of mass destruction all by yourself.

Maybe I'm losing something in the translation here, but Megatron's alt-mode has *never* been the same as Prime's.

Megatron doesn't need a consistent alternate mode. He simply adapts a new form for whatever gives him the maximum power for a given situation. Arguably best demonstrated by the RiD Megatron who has five alternate modes to choose from, and usually selects the one that gives him the greatest advantage for what he is trying to do at the time.

^This. G1 Megs especially. When he was a gun, he barely ever enen transformed. He's the one figure I think they could sell as just an action figure and no one would care. But logistically, the G2 Tank mode I think was the best mode for him. I don't like him as a jet, as there's too many jets in the Decepticons. And the Tanke truck thing is stupid, but hopefully when the movie comes out, it will prove me wrong

i think the best alt mode yet was the helicopter in animated, still retained his iconic look, and was a huge flying cannon

does his alt-mode matters? I mean, different universes = different alt modes! prime may be a truck in many universes, but never the same truck... megatron was at first a gun, but then what could make sense of a gun in other series, he was a tank, a t-rex, a dragon, a big head, a 2-headed dragon with many alt-modes, a tank, a space ship, a race car (or something like that), another space ship, a tank again and now a truck! (finally, I always wanted him to be something that can "race" against Prime, even if that isn't going to happen in movies xD), and finally, helicopter in animated and another space ship in Prime. Changes rules!

The alt-mode change is a good and bad thing about Megatron.

Good news: It's refreshing after each series to have a different Megatron design.

Bad News: What should Megatron tun into next? It's getting a little annoying having different designs over and over.

Personally Megatron should either be a Tank, Helicopter, Missile Truck or Stealth Bomber, Mostly an instrument of War that can display a cannon.

It makes perfect sense when you consider that the alt mode is not a fundamental part of the character, as it is portrayed in the text (not subtext) of Transformers fiction, it is simply a TOOL. Movie Megatron has no reason to care what his altmode is. In movie 1 he's in fly-to-Earth-from-Cybertron mode. In movie 2 he's in I-upgraded-to-a-bigger-gun mode. In movie 3 he finally is in a position where the utility of an earth mode is apparent.

Anyway, where were you and your angst back when Megatron had more modes than Sixshot? Movie 3 is not going to dictate what Megatron looks like forever. Case in point, Transformers Prime, he's back in the "flying cannon" mode that I tend to favor.
