what exactly is it that drives the villain to give his life in the end for the greater good?

an incredibly skewed sense of honor or morality?

perhaps a twinge of fear for his own immortal soul or in the villain seeing in the greater true original evil some trait that he the villain had long felt and believed identified he himself which he has in life always prided himself on and in seeing that trait in said greater evil realises all to late that he would not want to become said greater evil?

or perhaps it is a little of each of those and a unspoken desire to personally avenge the wrongful death of the villains fallen once and former lifelong adversary.

me i would never have once thought in a million years that megatron would die the way he did in alighnement as the flawed antihero turned hero.

perhaps he saw a life not worth living with out his adversary optimus prime to give him that challenge in life as it were.

me i always figured that when it comes to the original megatron that a part of him truly lived for the moment.

that is to say that he truly enjoyed fighting optimus prime. that in some manner of speaking he did not truly feel alive unless he was in the thick of the fight trading blows with optimus in hand to hand combat.

if there is one thing megatron has made unquestionably chrystal clear over the years it is that he will settle for nothing less then to fight optimus prime to the death, to crush the dying life from primes body with his own two bare hands and that this pleasure is reserved for megatron and for megatron alone.

which birngs with it the question

just how exactly would megatron handle the situation if somoene other then megatron himself were successful in robbing him of the pleasure of killing optimus prime

in some part i believe alighnment answeres that question.

there's was an all together warped and swordid form of kinship and comradeship, mutual respect and unspoken brotherhood as one warrior to another

all the way until his very death when he joined optimus in jynwan he left the fact that he saw optimus as a friend of sorts unspoken between them.

me i always figured that there was some slight kernal of inner good worth salvageing in megatrons character that was worthy of redemption and salvation and i figure that alighnment proves it

That did happen at one point, in the Marvel G1 comics. And he went insane because of it. Crushed Brawl's head, because he made a comment about it.

Armada Megatron sacrificed himself to stop Unicron when he discovered his own hatred was what was feeding him. Despite his want for power, he didn't want to see his entire race destroyed for it.

Did Brawl actually appear again after that, or was that Brawl being killed off. If so, you'd think Onslaught, Swindle and Vortex would've stepped in, they couldve taken Megatron easily.

Megatron as a hero... I'd be curious to see a whole series from the Decepticons point of view.

frankly i don't know whats more shocking people.

megatron dieing the anti hero turned hero in the end

or starscream dieing the selfless martyr for the greater good and at the same time redeeming himself for his past treachery in doing so.

    hold on a second.

did megatrons death in alighnment in any way inspire the direction they went with starscreams character in armada?

I dunno... not in the Marvel Comics continuity... Megs would have trashed all five of them if they'd given him any trouble.

The leaders were like forces of nature in Marvel. Megs alone defeated the Predacons/Predaking with some difficulty, and early in the series, thrashed the Dinobots pretty easily (significant to note that when he did it, Megs was being kept at low energy levels by Shockwave as well) .

The Combaticons would have been suicidal to challenge Megs, especially if they were one Brawl short of a Bruticus. :)

True, though knowing some of Marvels plots, they could have had a device to bring Galvatron 'C' or whatever its calling itself, into that time zone, as Galvy seemed even more powerful than Megs in top form.

Anywho, I thought it was somewhere that Megatron said "Peace through tyranny."

Transformers Armada. Megatron is portrayed as a lot more "likeable" in that series, he cares about his men most of the time, and while stubborn is capable of overcoming his old grudges to team up with Optimus and fight the greater evil of Unicron.

The whole final battle of the series is where Prime and Megatron fight as there can only be one, as long as they both exist, there will be a war and hatred to allow Unicron to feed.

In Armada I always got the impression Galvy just wanted Unicron's power, even if he had to destroy his mortal shell to get to it. :D

    ...

...um, maybe he did miss Starscream....

G1 had a lot of problems in the scripts for the cartoon, but I always loved the way Megatron was portrayed. Not so evil that he wanted to kill just to kill. He did have an usaid respect for Prime, and often did team up with Prime- though mostly it was when he wanted to save his own ass. Regardless, Megatron never wanted to obliterate Cybertron or Transformers in general, or even humans in general. He wanted energon and he wanted Cybertron to reign supreme. That is what would make Starscream such a bad leader- he would never think his way through and would act on hostile instinct.
I also really liked the Armada Megatron. He seemed more sophisticated then that of any other Megatron and did seem to care about his followers. If either Megatron from these series ever had the Autobots out of his way, he would have probably conquered the Galaxy and just end up a very bored dictator.

Well, he could be considered a hero in the G2 comics. He did bring that allow to the remaining Autobots and Decepticons so that the Swarm couldn't devoure them. He also worked with Optimus through most of the series.

Man, anyone play the PS2 video game of Transformers? Megatron got "badass" points in that one. After Prime defeats Tron on this platfrom, with has lava below, the platform becomes unstable and Megatron falls over the edge. Prime reachse out to grab Metatron's arm and catches it. Prime just saved Megatron from a horrible. Prime then screams, "Megatron!"

Megatron replies back with digust "Prime!" and to add insult says "You don't even know when you've won!" Megatron thrusts his arm breaking Prime's grip and willingly falls into the lava.

My friends who say that screamed out at how badass it was for a villan to fall like that.

Megatron seems to be very much a warrior who wants to bring glory to his home.

Megatron as a hero? This sounds like Raksha's fan fiction.

seriously man he literally died fighting the greater evil that was the leige maximo.

the guy consumed a truly staggering amount of raw high grade energonto the point that his body literally contained more power then it could safely handle at any one moment in time and he fired it in a single shot at the maximo.

with his death he redeemd himself in the end for his past actions and in destroying the leige maximo he made it possible for his fellow cybertronians to have a future.

he will always be one of the few fictional villains that i will remember as having died with honor in the end.

in a very warped manner of speaking in his own way optimus helped megatron to maintain what precarious hold megatron had on is sanity.

that is to say that optimus made it possible in some part for megatron to maintain his rationality and sanity.

hence megatron going all skizoid nuts in the comics after optimus died in the comics.

the two were never friends by any measure of theword as we would understand it and yet in spite of their enemity they each knew one another quite well.

distant friends perhaps when megatron referred to optimus as an old friend when they met up in jynwan.
