OK so here's the reason for the post: I don't have a Masterpiece Prime. I've been on the fence about it for so long, and I vacillate between regret about "missing out" on the prior releases and being just fine with not having one. Now that MPL-01 Convoy is here and supposedly the "final" edition, I am wondering - should I get him? Is it worth $150?

Why the hesitation? Because it's $150! I consider myself a mid-casual collector, and up until last week I'd never spent more than $25-30 for a single item. Then I got TFX-04 Protector, which was great... but ouch on the price (not to mention the wife = not too thrilled about it). It would be an uphill battle to get clearance on this one, so I have to be really sure it's worth it. :)

So thoughts? Is this latest one truly worth picking up, should I pass, should I look for an older version (Takara or the Hasbro one, even assuming I could find it cheaper)? I've always wanted a G1-accurate OP (I had the Powermaster Prime as a kid, not G1) - is this really the "definitive" one to have? I love my Classics Prime, maybe this is sufficient for my Classics shelf?

Decisions decisions... Thanks for any input!

Every fan should own some version of MP Prime. As good as Protector is, MP Prime is far better and really worth the $150.

I think after the Final Edition has been discontinued, aftermarket prices are going to skyrocket. Get him now or you'll regret it later.

I picked up a Hasbro MP Prime back when I started collecting in 2007 and boy oh boy it was the best purchase I ever made. He is by far my favourite figure and I love him to tiny pieces. If you don't have him then get him!

Bot mode yay. Vehicle mode nay. I ordered him when it first came out in 2003/2004. It has held up pretty well. All except the right foot it never stayed in the ball socket all that well. I would recommend him. That or the hybrid figure since it has the trailer and a number of other accessories.

here's my take though. His robot mode is awesome but he does need a trailer to complete him. I like the takara trailer but it was always out of my price range so I bought the figure loose and a justitoys (3rd party) trailer and still came out ahead....but even a casual collector should have one.

I would say, without a doubt, it's worth every penny. The only version of the mold I've yet to own has been the sleep one, and I never once regretted having multiples of it. You won't regret the purchase, ever.

    MP Prime is a MUST-HAVE!

With barely no effort you can score a Takara MP Prime (First Release) for around $100 or a Hasbro MP Prime for under $100... No sense in waiting for the final version when you can find the earlier releases now and for cheaper.

It's an awesome piece to own and it's the definitive Prime in my book.

yes he's worth getting, a great display piece. Don't listen to the guys who say you NEED to have a trailer for him. You don't. They're crazy. You'll never keep in truck mode anyway which can't be saved. Even by an expensive box clipped on the back.

Robot mode is awesome though, despite being eclipsed by every MP since (yes even Megatron... I like that he plays on some of the design cues from the G1 toy). Get him while you can, though you may be able to find one of the older versions for cheaper.

    that's why I have MP-01 + MP-04
    I still need MP-01B + MP-04S
then in the future I need a MP-11 Ultra Magnus with trailer to go with MP-02

Yeah man he is great - but there are always deals out there... I got an MP Convoy recently for less than half the price I'd sold my original US release one for a few months earlier. I was happy without him but for that price I couldn't say no really... Anyway - worth it? Yes! Worth an unhappy wife?? Prob not to be honest...

Yes, you should own this guy. I've had mine since day one. Its so bad ass. Although... I anticipate Takara one day making a new Optimus MP mold.

Buy it, and it may not be the last MP you want.

AFAIK, every version has a just slightly crooked right window in robot mode, aside from MP4 and MP1-L.

Also sound effect number 8 or 9 or MP1-Ls display stand is a blood curdling 'rarrrrrgh' sound.

Who doesn't want a Prime that does that?

It also gets a nod for the amount of diecast.
