In Transformers 2, when Sam is in class talking about properties of energon, he mentions that a key property Sentinel Prime discovered about energon is the ability to shift mass into other dimensions.... Soooooo... lets say in TF3 energon is discovered... will that allow (finally) a "scientific" explaination of Soundwave being an ipod AND a 40ft tall robot?

Ok, I've seen the movie twice in theatres, and countless other times I'm not allowed to talk about, and I don't remember him turning into an mp3 player once during rotf.

I could be wrong, but personally, I've always taken the whole "shifting mass into other dimensions" thing to mean being able to basically teleport bots and objects from one place to another place farther away. Doesn't really sound like "mass shifting" ala G1 Soundwave's size compared to his alt-mode, to me at least. On a side note, I think Soundwave is pretty much perfect as-is, so personally, I wouldn't want them to change his alt-mode to anything else. Maybe give him some remote-control minions that turn into ipod's and stuff, but I would prefer them to leave him as he is.

There was mass changing in movie 1. Allspark cube shrinks down from office building sized to basketball size that is easily carried by a human. Also Frenzy's head shrinks down to the size of a cell phone with the appropriate weight.

When was Soundwave an Ipod? I remember he was a satellite mobilizing the Decepticons throughout the whole movie.

He wasn't. The OP was saying that he could be one in TF3.

The Allspark shrank down in the first one. The door was opened right there.

There's an explanation... the Allspark is THE Allspark. If it can give sparks to transformers, then why not shrink? It's a life force, a source of power, therefore it is very powerful.

If they do include mass changing, maybe we'll finally see Astrotrain or some type of mass transportation for Decepticons/Autobots.

I always viewed Space-Bridge technology as an extention of the mass shifting (even tho I have no evidence to back that up).

As far as mass shifting, I'm not hardcore like 99% of the mouthbreathers, but I do think it'd be extraordinary to see a small item expand and fold out to become a 40ft tall robot. We were "wow"ed in TF1 with the concept of car robots. In TF2 we were "wow"ed by 12 drones combining into a 140ft tall super Zord. What could be next? If Bay and company truly are against robotic dinosaurs, they need to do something to wow the audience.

They've already opened the door to incredulity with the fem-con as well as the killer marbles/razorblade bot. Having seen that, tape-deck Soundwave or Prime's trailer would not be out of the question for the third movie.

Beat me to it. I saw it as a space bridge reference - which, seemingly, should go hand in hand with the discovery of Energon.

Actually, that door was opened in TF1.

The allspark mass shifted, true, but TF2 gave the "explaination" (the writers saying the wouldn't have transformation mass shifting unless it could be explained)... So now knowing that, I hope they use mass shifting to bring soundwave to earth, seeing as how if Ravage is roughly the size of a tiger, than soundwave is the size of a battleship destroyer... Tad big to be running around on earth.

I think the 'no mass shifting' rule is shit, and feel that Dreamwave's 'origami transformations' explanation is perfectly sound.

Indeed. The whole idea of teleporting body parts away for a while seems a bit too far fetched, even if we are talking about transforming robots. I do like the origami idea much better.

    You wanna talk about mass-shifting?

Re-watch the scene from TF1 where Prime picks up "THE GLASSES!" (as it is usually spoken).

Any semblance of plausible and consistent physics flew out the window right there.

    Don't forget Frenzy's mass shifting in TF1.

He didn't seem to change mass that much. Dude was made of like, toothpicks. If you shaved a radio-sized box of metal down to toothpicks, and stuck them end to end, I'm pretty sure you could come up with something around Frenzy's size.

Then you are clearly too cool to hang around this sort of forum.
