They're not organic. They're adamantium. But, as we found out a few years a go, they're part of his mutation. So... uh, bone under steel basically.

sure it is, the metal coated his bones. He had bone claws that were covered in metal.

When Magneto ripped the adamantium from his body, we found out he had bone claws.

In Origin, the bone claws also showed up when he mutated.

Yes, his claws are organic - they're bone. Just because they are covered with adamantium doesn't mean that they are not organic. That's like saying a tooth that's capped isn't organic.

    No inconsistencies there at all.

I remember thinking how ridiculous it was; that was pretty much when I gave up on X-Men comics.

I don't want to start anything here, but as a non-reader of X-Men I can't see how having big metal claws coming straight out of your hands is any less ridiculous than bone ones.

Wow. That makes two of us.
For me--and this is just me--I didn't like that for years, the claws had been portrayed as razor-sharp AND razor-thin blades. Now, all of the sudden, they were round claws. It seems like it might not be that big of a difference, but it annoyed me.

Ah, I get it now. Unsubtle retcons can be annoying.

    Damn, 14 years ago?

Yeah, I feel old now. I always thought that ripping the metal out of him was cool, but the claws weren't needed. How did he get the metal back anyway?

he got reimplanted the addamentium....it got ripped outta Sabretooth and put into him...think it was by Genesis.

He got it back in Wolverine #145...which is the 25th Anniversary issue of that comic

good recap of the issue can be found at: http://wolverine.x-knights.com/wolverine145.html

One thing that annoys me now is that Adamantium is supposed to be super rare. However EVERYONE and their cousin has tons of the stuff. (See War World Hulk #3)

Wolvie needs to get recoated with Super Adamantium plus to give him a new edge.

Oh yeah, bone under the metal coating. I kinda liked the story when he lost it, but I didn't like how he got it back.

Yea, the whole timeframe of Wolverine losing and getting his adamantium is just a big mindscrew. You have to read the original Astonishing X-Men 3 part series to fully understand it. But short short version, he gets his adamantium back and becomes Death.

What's funny is how many X-men have been Horsemen of Apocalypse.

ya. Apocalypse is just to lazy to find his own mutants so he steals Xavier's.

From my point of view: The original reason that Wolverine was picked for the Weapon X Program was that his mutation was his healing factor. He would be able to survive having the blades cut through his skin every time he popped them, not to mention having adamantium bonded to his skeleton (a process that, it was stated, would have killed anyone else).
Until the end of the Fatal Attractions storyline that was why he was chosen; not because he already had bone claws there.
To my mind it was a very clumsy retcon brought about as a result of Marvel sitting there after removing the adamantium, realising they had screwed up, and thinking "How the hell do we get round this...?"

This is how I know it was well. This led to a cool scene the first time they tried to rebond the adamantium to his bones.

That was just an artist thing. The claws were originally round. Some artists just started drawing them as blades, instead of claws. There were times you'd see both kinds in the same month. For some reason Marvel just let them draw the claws however they wanted.
