The New York Times is reporting that Marvel Entertainment is teaming up with renowned Japanese animation studio Madhouse to develop four anime series that will re-vision several of Marvel's iconic superheroes for the Japanese market (free registration required). The characters and back stories will be revamped to "reflect Japanese culture," and "create an entire parallel universe for Marvel," according to Marvel International president Simon Philips. The only superhero named in the article is Iron Man.

I think it could work if they do it Marvel Mangaverse style (Spidey being the last of a ninja clan, Hulk being basically the equivalent of Godzilla, Tigra looking like an anime cat-girl, etc...)

Awesome. Gotham Knight was so good, and Madhouse is a competent studio.

I think they should handle it like a traditional anime. Pick a 12-26 issue arc or larger of a specific comic. Say Ultimate Spiderman, or Ultimates, or even The Busiek/Perez Avengers. Then Animate it word for word. That's what most anime's are literal translations of the manga

I'd be interested in seeing DC do something like this, just to see the new interpretation of their characters (or a word-for-word animated adaptation of Dark Knight Returns, Kingdom Come or Watchmen). Marvel...I haven't read a Marvel comic in years and none of the stuff they're doing really excites me; I'm just not interested in their characters enough to bother watching an anime version.

This article mentions another. And, of course, it's Wolverine.

Okay...So yeah it will pretty much be Marvel Mangaverse: The Television Series.
Gotham Knight was good but as one-time thing. I think we should focus on making good American superhero shows instead of anime-like ones.

I am intrigued by this and look forward to hearing more, especially if they go the Marvel Magnaverse route. I really enjoyed the Marvel Magnaverse. :)

I like this kind of thing. I want to see what kind of new ideas they'll bring to these characters.

Excluding New Mangaverse, I hope. I liked most of it up to that point.

I don't know why folks are crying about this, were not the target audience and America has got a far worse track record of remaking and/or fucking up foreign enetertainment then Japan is ever likey to have.

I don't think they can do a Japanese version of the Avengers, I mean how do you make Captain America Japanese :lol

Apparently someone has never seen the live action JP Spiderman show where he had a giant robot~

Though in the long run, I'll prolly watch it when it comes out. Though 5 bucks says Ironman get's a laser sword.

So the 70s tokusatsu Spider-Man show balances out 50-odd years of dodey US remakes and edits of Asian and European media?

Apparently someone has never seen the AMERICAN live action Spider Man series? At least the Japanese version had an awesome robot.
