Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games due for Christmas

Nintendo and Sega have announced a joint collaboration to bring their company icons together in the same game.

Developed by Sega Japan, Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games has been licensed through a partnership with International Sports Multimedia, the interactive entertainment software licensee of the International Olympic Committee.

"We are thrilled to partner with Nintendo and ISM on the ground breaking title," commented Hisao Oguchi, president of Sega.

"For the first time, two of the world's greatest games' characters come together to compete in the world's greatest sporting event and we couldn't be more excited."

The game is due for release this Christmas for the Nintendo Wii and DS.

"The Olympic Games represent the true spirit of competition and passion," said Raymond Goldsmith, CEO of ISM.

"Bringing together intensely competitive and fun characters like Mario and Sonic in an Olympic setting helps showcase the sports of the Olympic Games in a new and compelling way for all generations," he added.

Have they actually produced any good non-arcade titles since the Dreamcast went tits up? I like to think that they have, but i'll be damned if I can actually name one.

Oh, since the Dreamcast? I guess PSO on the Gamecube doesn't count.

Also, Billy Hatcher -could- have been worse. Sonic was good on the DS too!

    Nintendolympics, eh?

Sounds good to me - even if it is just an AFJ.

And I loved Soccer Slam. Wonderful cheesy fun.

SSBB should be the game that gets the honor of having Sonic appear in a game with Nintendo's franchise characters (and Snake), but maybe it still will be, since the game commemorates the '08 summer games.

I love botht he Sonic and Mario series, but I was never one to get all excited about a cross-over, even in the 16-bit glory years. One series has always been primarily man vs. nature and the other nature vs. man.

Sonic needs to be in Brawl no doubt... but where's the recreation of the Nintendo vs Sega war? Where's Link vs NiGHTS? Samus vs Vectorman? Pikachu vs AiAi? I want a full spin-off that takes advantage of the console wars legacy, one character in Brawl is just a tease!

This seems like an April Fools joke (Sonic in the Olympics? How does any Mario character beat Sonic in Track & Field? Or beat Mario in swimming events, Sonic can't swim and Mario has Frog Suits) but if it's the start of the two companies collaborating... There could be great things in the future.

Since the game was announced today by Sega I doubt it is an April Fools joke. IGN now has an article on it with a picture of Mario and Sonic in Track & Field. You can view the article here.

...right, my jaw is on the floor at this point... the first game with Mario and Sonic head to head, and it's not in Smash Bros, it's not in a platform game... it's in an Olympics game? I never played an Olympics game that I liked, now I have to play this one to make my dreams of Mario vs Sonic real?

...well, they better at least have boxing or wrestling, I want combat between the icons!

This is WAY too good to be true. If this was real, we should have gotten word from the heads of Nintendo and Sega themselves. It's an AFJ, end of story.
