wow, we are now getting alot of it recently. with animated's many refrence and the classics line. I remember back when the most fanwank we got was a g1 repaint, or a toy that kinda looked like a g1 character, or even a ship's name being the ark. now we have alot more to please us.

I always thought "fanwank" was the stuff we (fans as a whole)came up with, like "subspace" and things of that nature.

Oh Sledge you sexual deviant, you....

I personally think that homages are Hasbro's way of saying that they still love the hardcore, GEEWUN fanbase.

    Touching really.

I grew up during Beast Wars, so whenever a Universe Beast Wars toys comes along like Cheetor or Dinobot that's really kickass. Plus, there's that awesome rumor about the Voyager Rhinox toy in Universe 3.0 :D

It seems like no matter what "piece" of the fandom you belong to, there's always stuff there to appease you. :D

    This was disgustingly funny.

    Is disgustingly a word?

I love the homages that have come across lately, especially Universe Cheetor. I know he's not a popular figure, but whatever.

There have been an incredible number of G1 and prior series nods in the last ten years, which I find pretty cool.

The BW airdate on Stalker Scorponok was a great example, and probably my favorite.

    That's fanon.

    Portmanteau of fan canon.

And OP's looking for Homages as his word.

"Fanwank" is getting crap like Monzo's name and birthday on Onslaught's toy, or Silverbolt's toy, or both, or whatever. That's Hasbro wanking one specific fan and making us all watch as we buy it.

    Onslaught's now gay porn.

That's pretty much what I was thinking. Wouldn't this be "fanwank?":

    Wow.

Wrong use of a bs term in a pointless topic that apparently thinks nods & tributes are somehow detrimental for no real reason provided.

    Congradulations. :)

No, he used it pretty much correctly, and I don't think he's saying they're detrimental. Fanwank, Fanservice, Tribute, Homage, or Reference, they're all pretty much the same idea. I'm going to assume your misspelling there was intentional, as well.

I think he's trying to get across the point that we've got a lot more than we used to, and we should appreciate that, as opposed to whining over what monsters the people who work at HasTak are. And to be honest, constant re-hashing of old ideas does take up space that new ones could occupy, but I think we've got a nice balance going on right now.

I think they're great when they're done right, when they're subtle, and its not the same reference over and over and over, but as others have posted, yes, giving fans what they want is also a quick way into their wallets. So its a double-edged sword, I think Hasbro wants to make the fans happy, and that the designers genuinely respect and appreciate all the work that has gone before theirs, but Hasbro IS a business, and at the end of the day, they need to make a profit.

Lol...I wonder how much Bay's movies boosted Fox's wank factor among the geeks...Guess almost to seismic scale, as she was almost a nobody before

It probably got something to do with the fact that 99% of the people working on the franchise are fans themselves ;)

Well, it is the franchise's 25th anniversary. I suspect that's part of the reason that there's so much fanwank, particularly in Animated. RotF was light on it, but the toyline makes up for it, mainly through Scorponok.
