It's a third party openly ripping off IPs. On the ethics scale this is as low as you can get with ip theft only higher then straight knock offs. Regardless your comparing mounds of dog poop in terms of ethics. One may look like the statue of david and another as an interpretation of David but it's still dog poop. Your trying to justify wrong with wrong. It doesn't work.

Incidentally, for the millionth time on this board, igear is not a manufacturer. They are a distributor. Much like Kotoys.com was but on a more professional level of sales.

I did the Motorhead artwork. I don't mind Maketoys using that pose for their not-Bonecrusher boxart. In fact, I love it. It's like a double slap in the face of Hasbro, who used my artwork without paying me in the past.

It's also ironic, since I'm getting these and Hercules as well.

i absolutely get where you're coming from Tekmen. it's analagous to the iGear seekers. the design was traced, colours changed and modified slightly. very different than doing an homage or fan art.

that being said, it is on a product that is basically fan art that's being sold for profit and it wouldn't stop me from getting it. the yellow does that ;)

there's no right or wrong in where someone will draw the line in terms of what they feel comfortable with. i don't know why everyone piled on you.

well if this is the only complaint people are having so far, it looks like Maketoys has a winner on their hands.

    When he's green anyway :D

Cool artwork! As a (kind sorta semi not a pro by any means) artist myself, I'm ambivalent about stuff like this. On one had I can understand the outrage when someone steals your hard work and doesn't compensate a single penny to you. On the other hand I loves me some 3P figures, stuff that HasTak would never give us in a million years in lieu of hordes of more Primes and BB toys. So conflicted there. XD

Thanks for giving us a bit of perspective, and chiming in with your two cents, Macraptron. That said, I also find it interesting that you say Hasbro never paid you for the time and effort you put into said artwork. I guess Hasbro are hardly the saints that purists often try to paint them as, even if two wrongs don't make a right. XD

It happens more then you think. Upper Deck shafted me for 10 months for trading card work payment. I remember these companies, being younger, as being awesome and stand up. Then you get on the other side and it's like the curtain being pulled back and seeing an ugly old man named Mr. Burns.

It's curious why that was done. Whoever did the Maketoys art didn't copy most of it, and seems to be perfectly capable of doing good illustration. Usually you see this kind of tracing when the person is an awful artist.

I think he's just upset because it would of been more tasteful that they made their own artwork rather than superimpose and trace over pre-existing artwork.

This is just speculation, but I'm guessing the artwork was commissioned out to someone else. Maketoys may not even know what that person did.

They just copied the hands and forearms and the pose. Does not seem like a big deal to me. Hands are hard to draw :p

i think it's awesome you took the time to dig up the original sources of where the traces came from. really cool to see the comparisons.

no big deal to me that they didn't do the art totally from scratch

Actually Maketoys Giant disappoints me for a lot different reasons. Glad I went with Hercules now, I really am.

Would it have been more tasteful if they built their own toy rather than stealing from Hasbro/Takara Tomy? I see no difference. Either you are in with 3rd party or you are out. You can't cherry pick.

I go to the Hercules megathread and find that people are ecstatic to have paid $600 for a Devastator with broken hips.

And then someone starts a thread to complain about the box art for Giant?

    This place is very bizarre.

Same way I don't understand why everyone loves iGear Delicate Warrior for its $110 price while everyone hates PE Arcee (which also arguably offers more) at its $75. Double standards are everywhere here for some reason.
