Now that we've gotten word from people who have seen the completed film, it's been confirmed that the ending of DOTM has been changed radically from the novel and comic adaptation.

My question is which ending do you prefer? Are you happy with Megatron fighting Optimus and getting his head cleaved and spine torn out after they kill Sentinel, or would you rather have seen Megatron, beaten and humiliated, offer a truce between sides and the factions form a tenuous alliance to rebuild their world?

Personally, I prefer the adapted ending. It provides better closure for the series, makes Megatron some actual character development, and breaks away from the same "bad guy dies THE END" go-around that we've seen so many times.

If you don't mind answering, how exactly does the DOTM novel end?

    Rough rundown:

Carly talks Megatron into fighting Sentinel, Megs helps Optimus kill Sentinel. After Sentinel is killed, Megatron basically falls to his knees, beaten, humiliated, and quite understandably, tired of fighting for what he now saw as a pointless cause and begs Prime for death. When Optimus refuses, Megatron calls for a truce between factions. Optimus agreed to the truce, but had clear doubts that the peace between factions would last, and it resulted in a tenuous alliance so the race could rebuild their home together.

Nothing is told, but Megatron says he will go back to Cybertron, make things right, and then they can live together as one race, or something along those lines.

I like that a hell of a lot more than the movie ending.

I'll wait for the movie to find out which is better but the novel version is nicely fleshed out for a truce. Hope they have it for the DVD/Blu-Ray release as an alternate ending even if it is a rough animatic.

Megatron goes back, promising to send word to Prime when Cybertron is habitable again.

My main problem with the new ending is that I would have liked to have seen Megatron become Galvatron in a fourth movie with Unicron as the big bad. On the other hand, the ending in the novel always felt flat to me and I wondered if general audiences would buy that Prime would allow Megatron to live given all the death and destruction he caused.

The truce is hands down the better ending.

Once again, the TF franchise demonstrates that its printed matter is usually (with a few exceptions, of course) better in quality than its celluloid material - a tradition that started with G1 and persists today.

for me it depends if they can lead up to the truce well enough or if its power hungry megatron invades, carly convinces him to help, and then BAM truce

I won't be able to judge it until I see the movie but on paper, the book ending seems better because it gives it closure, but it also leaves it open if someone wants to make a sequel.

The main problem (and possible why it was changed) is that the novel and comics were able to show Megatron's thought process throughout the story, thus making the call for peace not so out of nowhere.

The movie does not have this liberty, thus it might feel strange at the end.

Even though I have no plans of seeing DOTM, a final battle would be proper. A truce is completely out of what little character Movie Megs has.

But then you also have to consider the pointlessness of having Carly convince Megatron to help Optimus just for our "hero" to maliciously kill him.

Monolog, both internal and otherwise, has been a part of films for decades.

Surely Michael Bay isn't so lowbrow that he can't utilize it.

But has Michael Bay ever put any sort of monolouge in his films? (Aside from Prime's speeches.)

The truce would have been far better.
