WTF to this. This is so forced. Like you said if alternate universe thing then okay. To change an existing character like that...ugh...

    Damn you DC.

Sorry, only looked at thread titles, not fifty-plus pages of an established thread. :D

Well, the New 52 basically is an alternate universe compared to the real DC continuity (yeah, I'm still going there). The character that's coming out is one that hasn't appeared in the New 52 yet, either, so it's not like Batman or Superman is abruptly switching to play for the other team. Honestly, I wouldn't be that surprised if it was a character from James Robinson's Earth-2 book, since Robinson has a history with including strong and well developed homosexual characters in his work.

Just found out about this today lol. Where did it say it's someone who hasn't appeared in the new 52? I read that it was one of the more iconic characters. Seriously, I was thinking Aquaman :D

This is so unnecessary. When real world politics and PCness invade comics, they just ruin them, IMO.

    I was too, sadly.

Anyway, why don't we find out who it is before we decide whether it's forced. The way they're sensationalizing this is cheap and reeks of exploitation of shock value, but maybe the writers have found something that will work.

I heard they're doing it in response to the fact that Marvel's Northstar is getting married. You know how Dc and Marvel are always trying to one up each other.

No problem with this. It's not like DC doesn't reinvent the characters every now and then anyway. I'd have a bigger problem with a uniform change, to be quite honest.

I don't think it will be one of the "big three" (well, maybe WW). Superman needs Lois Lane, Batman needs to be something of a playboy... though a part of me can see it being Batman, too, since that's really just part of his whole Bruce Wayne "act".

But the Flash, Green Lantern, etc? Who cares.

Real-world events and social issues rarely ruins art, including comics. That kind of thinking runs contrary to pretty much any good artist or writer... :)

No, I think you people are all misunderstanding what is going on here.

Clearly, this means the character imitates Underdog in that he/she rushes into the nearest closet they can find. The closet then explodes as if it was in a Michael Bay film, leaving the superhero/heroine in their super suit unharmed.

(Serious reply: I've never followed DC, so I don't actually care all that much. I suspect it won't be Batman, though, because despite the homo jokes made about his relationship with robin, making him a homosexual would possibly have a negative impact on the Dark Knight Rises movie coming up, and after the smash hit Avengers was DC needs their movie to make all the money it can in hopes of not being too drowned out in the shadow of the best film of 2012 so far)

I thought the same thing about the new Ultimate Spider-Man, but that's been doing really good so far.

Having a character that will stick? The Wednesday crowd won't buy an entirely new character because they're obsessed with the past, new audiences won't buy because thier business model is shit and no creator with a legit good idea for something new is going to hand it over to DC.

They've already confirmed it won't be Bruce Wayne here although from the start I doubted DC would be stupid enough to change anything about their #1cash machine lol. Here's the link where they were talking about it.
