I was just in Walmart, and they had an anime stand in the middle of a main isle. It had different two-packs of various animes wrapped together. They had several Macross Plus DVD two-packs, with the DVDs being Volume One (parts 1 and 2) and Volume Two (With parts 3 and 4). It was $17 for the set. Not to shabby, right? I picked it up, along with the Voltron: Volume 1 tin.

If it's the 10th Anniversary version that's a great price.

From what I hear the 10 anniversary edition isn't that great so i think you got a good deal. I think that they were $20 a piece when i bought mine long ago.

The movie edition is an edit of the 4 episodes into one 90 minute movie. From what I remember of it, there are some edited scenes and less material than if you'd watch the episodes separately.

That's mostly right, but there are alternate versions of some scenes, and a much better (and better animated) death scene near the end. You can't really get everything without watching both versions. Unfortunately, Manga didn't do a great job with either of them.
