FFmpegX is the best converter for macs, hands down. The original FFmpeg for PC is alright, not fantastic.

ummm but the reason im converting it is, because for christmas i got a portable dvd player that will play mpeg format, and i have lots of videos, music and cartoons on my computer, as well as some movies and stuff... i dont have a dvd burner, so im trying to cheat my way into some entertainment and such...

I use Pegasys TMPEG Encoder 3.0. You should be able to find a trial verson of it. Also use TMPEG author 1.6 because once you've converted to avi files to mpeg you'll need to author them so they are the right file type to burn to DVD.

Let me know if you need any help if you get those programs. More than happy to get you started (granted, I don't know everything about these programs but the basics to make DVD files :D )

    Encoder:

    Authorer:

    http://tmpgenc.pegasys-inc.com/en/download/tda20.html#trial

EDIT, I see you don't have a DVD burner so nevermind the authorer, the encoder should be all you need. I think...
