So, last night me and the hubby get home after seeing a movie and I see this tiny spider crawling around in a web near our porch light. Instantly I knew it was a Black Widow and proceeded to kill it with massive amounts of spider spray. Well, for extra measure I sprayed behind our porch light. This morning, I go and get the mail and see a freaking adult Black Widow just hanging under the light. Our mailbox is located under this so I freak and take a step back. But as the wind blew it, I saw it was dead. But if I hadn't sprayed behind the light, it would still be alive. The web it created is insane! It's everywhere, no real rhyme or reason behind it.

Here is picture. Now I tried to take this with my macro lens while the wind is gusting at 20mph. So, it's a tad blurry and I had to boost the contrast so the hourglass can kind of be made out. Strange to see a Widow out like this especially with the weather being so hot as of late. This is the first Widow I've seen since the infestation at a Girl Scout camp I was at fourteen years ago.

I would have captured it and then let it go in my neighbor's house.

Damn. I would've torched it with some Axe and a lighter afterwards, just to be sure.

Or at least someone you hate...

Me too. The more time I get to spend with my blowtorch, the better.

I try not to kill spiders out of habit, but when I was working in West Texas on a wind ranch 6 years ago, most of the towers that the turbines are perched upon were infested with black widow spiders. I never went anywhere on the jobsite without my trusty 10-lb. rubber mallet.

Scorpions got impaled with a very long-handled screwdriver.

Cool. I'm glad we don't get Black Widows around here. From what I know, they tend to have randome webs to fit their needs. They also happen to be some of the stronger webs.

This thread is a bit of a funny irony for me. I'd never seen a black widow in person until today. There was on right under my feet. A metal walkway ( with the holes in it so you can see through it ) had a web underneath and I could see the black widow over in the corner. I got real close to her and could see the hourglass on her belly real good. When the guy finally answered the door, I showed her to him and he refused to go out that door. :lol .

I'm extremely fascinated by spiders. I do know that a black widow will only bite you if you are somehow threatening their nest. Otherwise, they will just run away. They have an undeserved and untrue reputation as being predators looking to bite any thing any chance they get. It's not true. Like human women, they protect their babies.

I hate spiders. I got bitten by a Brown Recluse spider when I was about 10. The venom of it makes the area of the bite swell, then, like if it were touched by acid, the flesh and muscle melts away.

    And it's painful as hell.

I've heard that a relativly healthy 20-40 year old person actually has a good chance of surviving a black widow spider bite. It is the very old or very young that may not survive.

Crazy. I learned last summer our basement housed large amounts of spiders. Winter came and they were all gone. This summer its a scary epidemic to the point I refuse to venture down there until I bundle myself up like a hazmat suit, and even then its usually a mad dash. Last time I went there were web lines crossing the whole stairway.

This winter I will be thoroughly cleaning the basement and in the spring I shall be using many methods to keep them into a manageable and healthy number.

Didn't someone post an article a while back about how in southern Chile some men bitten by black widow spiders gained superhuman virility?
