According to Shockwave's toy bio, it was believed that Longarm had existed a long time ago. After he went offline, Shockwave searched Longarm's files and took over his Autobot identity. Well, if that's really the case, then why Sentinel Prime (formerly Sentinel Minor) gave Shockwave this name in the first place?

Probably because the toy bios and cartoon weren't written by the same people.

I don't think the bio was written with the show in mind at that point.

There is a fine line between physical appearance identity, and name identity.

Identity is more than a name. If you subscribe to this kind of thinking, its easy to assume that Longarm stole his physical likeness from X Autobot in the databanks... NOT the name.

Hope that helps some of you unchap your @sses. :)

    The bio specifically says:

Doesn't say anything about his name. He looked threw the old Autobot historical files, picked a suitable bot, and then stole his identity. Like Longhaul53 has pointed out, identity is more than just a name.

the 'bots don't even get their official name before boot camp, so they have to have some sort of identity before then

It's not like he wasn't going to get any other Bootcamp nickname from his long arms.

Extendor would like to argue otherwise ;)

At any rate, the answer appears to be that the bio and the show were created independently of each other. The toy just needed a reason for the secret identity more interesting than "it was the name the Autobots gave his secret identity at boot camp". Saying he hacked the files and picked someone to base his undercover identity on sounds far cooler and more in line with his spy identity.

Right. In this case, it could mean anything from "Longarm"'s looks, to the Cybertronian equivalent of birth certificate, social security number, or what have you. Maybe he killed the original "robot who would be Longarm" and took his place, or simply found an identity record he could use for himself. Just something for the military applications board to see so he won't go "Hey, you've got no Autobot ID! What are ya, a Decepticon or sumthin'?" No direct conflicts here.

I always wondered if maybe Counterpunch existed before Punck took on his identity. Maybe even they were brothers, and when Counterpunch was killed, Punch was modified to look like him. Gives the character more believability if Counterpunch is a long established Decepticon who really did have an Autobot brother.
