    So sad.

Another example of how the actions of humanity, intended or unintended, can have dramatic impacts on the world around them. Lonesome George spent years as a tragic living example of that, and hopefully inspired many to action in preventing other species from sharing his fate. That (as far as we know), his entire species is now just history is a tragic price to pay for that, however.

But there's hope. Conservation efforts have managed to nearly remove the feral goat population from Pinta Island, and the vegetation that they destroyed is starting to restore itself. As these feral goats were almost certainly the source of extinction for the Pinta Island Tortoise, their removal represents a movement back to the natural ecosystem of the island, albeit far too late for George and his kin. Or maybe not, as hybrid tortoises are still being discovered, with leaves a faint hope that maybe, just maybe George wasn't the last of his species, and if we can find purebred examples, we can begin a repopulation program. We've seen how this kind of concentrated effort can help in species like the kakapo, after all. But most importantly, we've seen that what we do as a species can either save threatened species, or bring them to extinction, and we need to act accordingly.

:rip : They find and refind animals all the time. He might not have been the last one.

George Carlin, noted environmental biologist and ecological historian.

They're currently hoping that George may not be the last of his kind, but its a thin hope and even then, it may not be enough to repopulate the species (especially since they'd have to find two of them).

Some species go extinct because of circumstances outside of human control, but in George's case, his species was wiped out because of destruction from a competing species introduced by human beings. We do have an impact, and we CAN work to undo our mistakes, as recently shown by the kakapo.
