Until they actually start shooting this I don't believe this movie is for real.

Why is that all I see in my mind's eye when the words "Akira" and "Live-Action" are mentioned in the same sentence is massive train wrecks and angry mobs?

That would be your fanboy sense. And no, your not alone.

Well it would be unfair to say it shouldn't get one, if any non-Marvel comic is worthy of the big screen treatment then Akira is certainly that.

I think mainly I'm off base on it because as it will undoubtedly be a Hollywood film, then most of its elements will be boiled down to a marketable stereotype for easy money and sales. Now if we were getting a joint Japan/US venture, then I think the potential for greatness would just go through the roof. You've got the original artists, story writer and then proceed to sit them with a savvy Hollywood director and SFX team.

Then again, if the right group of folks were to get their hands on it, I see no reason this film could not be a roaring success.

Are Leonardo Dicaprio and Joseph Gordon-Levitt still Kaneda and Tetsuo/Travis? If so, then this movie seems to be going in the right direction! Both seem like GREAT choices, top notch actors.

If the script is as faithful as they say, then I'll certainly go see it.

Edit: Yeah, so Japan buys Manhattan. Makes much more sense now.

This makes me... hopeful. I can't say happy or excited, but I'm not really scared now. I like the idea of including some of the ideas from the Manga that were omitted/changed for the Anime. As great as the Anime is, and it's easily one of my favourite films ever, I enjoy the Manga even more.

I like the way New Tokyo/New Manhatten is being handled...

I'll have to read that when I am more awake and alert. I will make my feelings known at that time. For now it is time for bed.
