    Let's change ROTF: Leader Prime's head LED...together.

I will post a video later.

So I have gotta some questions about the LED in Leader class primes head. Well, green is just not the way to go now is? I think not. So, you wanna change it? It is very easy!!

I am gonna name the three major parts you have to work with.

    1. The head

    2. The LED holder

    3. The Neck

    TOOLS:
    SCREW DRIVER
    PRY DEVICE
    SOLDERING IRON
    SOLDER.
Maybe some tape to help hold the LED in place when you solder.
    Small wire strippers.
You will also need a 3mm high intense white or blue LED

Those may have specific names, but I don't know them:)

Step one: Remove Prime from package

Step two: Unscrew Primes head using appropriate size screw driver. Remove it and be sure the transparent blue piece stays in place. Also, as a good rule of thumb, keep the screw in the head when you put it aside!

Step 3: Remove the screw that is holding the LED holder. It is the only screw visible, the other below it is a pin you do not need to remove.

Step 4: From behind, pry the neck open while removing the LED holder. Be sure not to apply to much pressure when prying, but IT WILL be okay to get the LED HOLDER out. (This is a little scary at first, but it is okay)

Step 5: Open the LED holder making sure you keep the wire through the little hold while you work here. Snip the wires as close to the LED as you can. Remove the LED. Strip the wire just enough to solder. Cut the new LED leads short enough to fit inside the LED HOLDER. Be sure you know which side is positive. You can do this by making Prime talk and holding the ends of the LED to the exposed wires.

Step 6: Solder together. Close back up. Pry open the neck once more and put the LED holder back in it!! Screw the head back on!!

    Hopefully this will help somebody.

I DO NOT HOLD ANY RESPONSIBILITY FOR INJURIES TO YOURSELF OR PRIME!! DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!

The result. This is not photoshopped. I just took the pic in the dark. (I will do a light up blade tutorial later)

Seeing as how I can barely use an Xacto knife without severing an artery, I'm not touching this one. :D  Very informative, though.

You and me both! If there's a knife involved, I'll cut myself. If there's glue involved, I'll glue my fingers together. I'd hate to think what would happen if soldering is involved.

Thas cool, but I'd never do that. After all, chopping up a $50 dollar figure doesn't seem smart to me.

I would add that the only cutting that needs to be involved is the removal of the insulation. It's a lot easier to desolder the green LED than to snip it off and strip the wires. This also leaves some solder on the wires- free tinning!

CUTTING? OHHH. THE blade. I was using that to pry open the LED holder!!! Only cutting is the wires.

Yes the green would mix with whatever color you painted.

I believe the longer leg of the led is the positive. It has been a while since I've done anything with led's

The entire installation really wasn't so bad...regardless of how much experience you have with electronics.

However, I did run into some bad luck...

First off, Radioshack (at least around here) doesn't carry 3mm blue/white LEDs. So I went home defeated.

Then I remembered that I grabbed all these lightup giftcards from Target! I remembered seeing them, and figured someday they would come in handy! Crack one open, and what do we have? 8 x 3mm blue LEDs!!! Free! (Depending on whether you feel good about "taking" a giftcard without loading money on it...)

After disassembling my Prime, I broke the little tab that holds the right chest piece in place...(stupid me), so off to Walmart for another.

Upon getting home, I disassemble the guy, and follow Encline's instructions. Worked perfect. His advice about testing which side is the positive and negative connection is very important. Test. Test. Test.

I put his head back on, and damn...that LED was so bright that it lit up the entire head. I sharpie'd as much of the inside of the head as possible...but that may be an important step to a lot of you. I tried a few alternatives, like putty inside the head to block the light, but it didn't seem to work.

    Here's the result:
    Optimus Prime with blue optics

It was completely my fault, but wasn't a big deal. I already returned the Prime to Walmart.

    I PM'd you though!

I imagine the giftcards are still available. They might not say "Blu-Ray" but walk around and check out all the giftcards...some must still have blue LEDs. I also have a couple of X-Mas one I just found that are even brighter...but I haven't opened them up to see what's inside yet...

Could you use a 5mm LED and just cut away some of the plastic, or does it have to be a 3mm LED? I don't know a whole lot about electronics, so a straight yes or no would be fine.

So, I'm going to answer my own question.

YES! You can use a 5mm LED if you don't have a 3mm LED. If you're going the Radio Shack route, make sure you get the 2600 mcd one, otherwise you won't be able to see anything.

Now, since this is a larger LED, you have to do some additional cutting.
    - You'll need to cut out a lot of the neck to fit the larger prongs.
    - You'll need to cut out some of the clear blue plastic (just the ridge at the top), so it'll fit.
    - You'll need to cut some of the solid plastic bar that runs across the back of Prime's head.

The LED will sit ABOVE the neck and in the head. When you cut the leads, make sure that you cut them long enough (mine were about 3/8")

It looks great though! Can't tell when I've got the flourescents on, but when it's dark his whole head does light up.

    Enjoy!

GO TO THE BLU RAY SECTION!!!! I PICKED UP 5 CARDS. 5 x 8 =45 3mm bright blue LEDs for free!!! You have to put $5.00 on each card, but I bought a Transformer after I put the money on the card, with the cards!!!!

Well, no, but it would be a lot easier!!! Glad you changed it out!!
